The words from the man that founded evolution said it best, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent but the one most responsive to change,” said Charles Darwin in 1809. This quote is related to this conflict in Inherit the Wind because Drummond was open-minded and open to new beliefs. Where Brady, on the other hand, was very close minded and has a fixed mindset. I think the mindset of the lawyers was helpful in parts of their arguments. Drummond had a better mindset and since he did he won. Others would say Brady won the overall trial. This stance fails to consider that the other side won. Drummond won the overall trial.

Right before his rant, the novel says “…there is another burst of laughter” (101). In the novel, it states, “All of you know what I stand for! What I believe! I believe, I believe in the truth of the book of Genesis (beginning to chant) Exodus, Leviticus, number, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, First Samuel, Second Samuel, First Kings, Second Kings” (101). Then Drummond interrupts ‘Your Honor, this completes the testimony. The witness is excused!” (101). The Brady is talking again “(pounding the air with his fists) Isaiah, Jeremiah, lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah (there is confusion in the court. The judge raps.)” (101). After the judge is done rapping he says this “You are excused, Colonel Brady.” Even after this Brady is still trying to speak “Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah” (101). This shows that Brady could not handle when he was the one being humiliated in the court. Brady will hand out the laughter to Drummond and Cates but he is not able to take it. In the book “Hear the Wind Blow” by Mary Downing Hahn takes place in Virginia during the Civil War. Haswell’s problem is that his home was burnt down by Yankee soldiers and his mother died of a fever leaving him and his little sister Rachel orphans and nothing but a horse, old blankets and a root cellar with minimal food. Haswell decides to travel with his sister to the grandmother's farm but when they find the house in shambles and no one there they head for Winchester to find their uncle. When they get there they find the uncle is housing a Yankee soldier. Haswell's main conflict is that he needs to find his older brother Avery, who is fighting in Petersburg. John smith, the accused, stood up in the courtroom and started yelling at the judge about what he thought of his innocence irrespective of the decision that the judge would make. They are named the Little Rock and fight through the school year, while students and segregationists are threatening and harassing them. Warriors Don’t Cry—a memoir of Beals’ personal experience—should be taught in schools because it teaches students to treat each other equally and to be brave, while it also shows the struggle of being an African-American in the 1950s. Another lesson taught in the retelling is that everyone can make a change.
Civil disobedience is a main focus of discussion in chapter six of James Rachels’ The Elements of Moral Philosophy; this can be defined as a usually peaceful, but powerful act of protest against a law or demand from the government. Normally when one would non-violently refuse to obey a certain law, they would see that the law was unjust to them.
I chose to watch Gone with the Wind for my epic movie. I really enjoyed the movie. Gone with the Wind is about a girl named Scarlett O'Hara is the daughter of an Irish immigrant who in 1861 owns a plantation named Tara in Georgia. Scarlett is infatuated with Ashley Wilkes, who, although attracted to her, marries his cousin, Melanie Hamilton. At the party announcing Ashley's engagement to Melanie, Scarlett meets Rhett Butler, who has a reputation as a rascal. As the Civil War begins, Scarlett accepts a proposal of marriage to a man who she does not love and later dies in war. After the war, Scarlett inherits Tara and manages to keep the place going. When desperate measures take place and Scarlett can’t get money to pay for Tara she marries a wealthy man who later dies attacking the men that assaulted her. After that Rhett confesses his love and they get married, but when things get rough and Scarlett’s true colors appear he packs up and leaves.
The civil right movement was one of the most defining and revolutionary time in our country. I was a movement of changing, it build of the struggle of African American for 100 years after the emancipation proclamation. African Americans in the south was still being treated unequally. They found themselves in a word of unfair treated, disenfranchisement, segregation and various forms of oppression. For many generations, especially in North America, homosexuality was not accepted in any way, shape, or form. Many believed that it was a medical illness that was curable, when in reality, people were, and still are, ignorant and could not come to terms that everyone in this world is different from one another. For many instances of being treated unjust, many individuals in the gay community did not want to “expose” themselves and remained in the “closet”. As means to make gays and lesbians proud and take a stand for who they are, a movement spread across internationally. This movement is known as “The Gay Liberation” movement which occurred between the late 1960s and the early to mid 1970s (“Gay Liberation”). The Gay Liberation movement urged individuals of the gay community to “come out,” revealing their sexuality to their loved ones as a form of activism, and to counter shame with gay pride (“Gay Liberation”). The Stonewall Riots are believed to have been the spark that ignited the rise of the Gay Liberation movement; it influenced the way the gay community is viewed socially and how their rights are politically present day.
The “Monkey Trial” in 1925 was one of the most famous clashes in history between the Bible and evolution. The concept of the play was based on the Scopes Trial, but characters, actions, and words were altered. During the trial, William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow went to court to try John Scopes for illegally teaching evolution, causing major complications in Dayton, Tennessee. In the play Inherit the Wind, the character, Henry Drummond, parallels his real-life counterpart, Clarence Darrow, through ¬his appearance, beliefs, and actions.

All of them!”(Fink, page 1265) Nearing the end of her testimony, it can be gathered that the first woman is falling apart. Her sentences become shorter, more direct, and she loses focus on the specific details asked by the prosecutor in favor of focusing on her self determined fact that all of them had shot during the liquidation. “I was afraid…. terribly afraid”(page 1264), the same fear that coursed through her that day was showing its face once again, causing this crack in her testimony. Typically if one’s manner of speaking falls apart like so then their body movements also become more rigid as their voice becomes both louder and shattered. Though Fink did not paint the picture of the scene to us directly, she has done so through the characters speech, and from this picture a young woman is seen. With concern over global warming growing, people are starting to turn a more serious eye toward cleaner sources of energy. Instead of solar power making a comeback as the ideal form, we are seeing a growth in the use of wind power. Wind farms are beginning to crop up all around the country. This new trend has gathered significant attention. Questions are being raised concerning the effects wind farms may have, from critics and supporters alike. Michelle Nijhuis, in the article “Selling the Wind” discusses the arguments on behalf of and in opposition to the increasing use of wind power, addressing what the consequences may be on the United States.
The act of civil disobedience existed for a long time, dating back to the Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and early Christians. The height of the civil rights movement was the 1950’s to 1960’s. During this time period, many activists fought for racial equality and rights. Civil disobedience was practiced by these people who fought for racial equality and rights. Martin Luther King Jr. and Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mocking Bird used civil disobedience as an act of fighting back against injustice in order for a better society. These two people, Martin Luther King Jr. and Atticus Finch, of the time of the 20th century practiced civil disobedience in the name of justice.
He was impressed by this man because he was able to stand in front of the group and stick with his guilty verdict and not be swayed at all. The “old man” stood up for the man by telling everyone that they basically owe it to the boy to listen to all of the arguments.
The rage of the disesteemed is personally fruitless, but it is also absolutely inevitable; this rage, so generally discounted, so little understood even among the people whose daily bread it is, is one of the things that makes history.
