Space is called the final frontier. The ability to explore space not been around long. Since the 1960s men have slowly been increasing their presence in space. Now in the early twenty first century, space exploration is at a stand still with the government agencies having a lack of funding and private companies only recently starting up. In the upcoming years, modern space programs will be ready to further push mankind; this is something that cannot be done by one government agency or private group. Only by working together can space exploration reach its full potential. Governments do not invest as much into space exploration as they did previously. Currently the budget for NASA is around one fourteenth of a percent of the GDP compared to This also slows down their process because once they are out of money; they are out. NASA does not have the amount of money needed to complete the stages to preform their missions. The solution to this lack of money can be solved in two steps. First of all, the current way to estimate cost needs to be changed. The current models are too dependent on tools not failing and missions going well. There are little that accounts for failing and Wundschock 2 that is more a reflection on the mindset of this generation than it is on the cost models. There is a disconnect that exists between what is expected and reality. In reality there are things that are going to fail, this is how ideas improve. If teams are expected to be complete projects on their first try, there is no room for improvement, innovation or refinement. The second way to fix this problem is to have private companies come in and work with the government. This can be very beneficial because this would allow NASA to focus their efforts on a specific part of their mission. This is because if we let them, another country can one-up us which in the end can lead to major problems for the U.S. The NASA program also gives us a whole new insight to how we see things and how we live our lives daily. For example Google Maps, which is used by many people, uses satellite that we get from having this program. The question of whether or not to make space travel privatization functional has been a problem for the government, NASA, and for anyone else interested in space travel. Space travel privatization is about making private space companies to be able to send people into space. It relates to being able to earn enough money for more space companies to open up and benefits us with a possibility to send humans back into space again. Space travel should not be privatized because if done correctly, we will be able to travel to space, save money spent from buying seats on Russian spacecrafts, and to have more jobs in the space exploration fields.

NASA is constantly over budget and behind schedule. So how badly is NASA being run? A U.S. Government report states that more than 50% of NASA’s programs over-budget and past-deadline; and some of the others having no deadline at all. The Government Accountability Office looked at 18 separate NASA programs, finding that 5 are running without any deadline at all! In total, there are only 3 that have made their deadline, all of which are over budget. The Mars Science Laboratory is running 25 months behind schedule and 26% over original cost estimates, and the Glory climate satellite is an incredible 53% over budget! (nasa). This constant over-budgeting by NASA results in higher taxes on the American people.
When people think of troubles that are related to space, they tend to overlook one of the most obvious and most important problems, financing. Money may prevent humans from leaving the very earth we stand on in the first place. Money can easily be the solution to a problem or the cause of one. In the supporting film, Stationed in the Stars, it was mentioned that in 1992, NASA spent 8 billion dollars without building a single piece of material. The money was spent on other things such as payroll and international conferences. The film also brought up the fact that every pound of water needed would cost up to 10 thousand dollars; therefore, 100 lbs. of water would cost 1 million dollars. This problem was later solved with the help of Russia in the creation of the closed loop system. But Russia has not always been so helpful. While Russia was working with NASA to help build a service module, they purposely delayed their efforts in order to receive more money from NASA, until NASA had enough and gave them a deadline to comply with. There are times when financing may prevent a project from being ventured into completely without even spending the money. For example, further servicing of the International Space Station would have cost upwards of 100 billion dollars. That is why that project is still uncompleted.

NASA’s research and innovation looked promising, but it came at a cost. Money, resources, and spacecraft accidents, most famously Apollo 13 all hindered NASA’s research. In the 21st century, the debate over funding for NASA is at its peak since the birth of the organization in 1958, especially when there are numerous problems throughout the world. Is the money spent on space exploration worth the advantages and advances it contributes to society? When considering this topic, one might ask themselves, why explore space?

The 1960's brought new advancements for all of Earth. Machines and men were sent into space, and this sparked a new government agency, called NASA. Space was a new frontier, and virtually everyone was interested in exploring it. Over the years, the interest in space exploration has weakened, and NASA was almost terminated from existence, although there have been many advancements in it over that time. Space exploration should continue because it could help solve many problems on Earth, such as overpopulation and lack of resources. Exploration of the final frontier must continue in order for human life to continue.
