Sex offenders in the United States (U.S.) are considered to be the worst of the worst. They are at the bottom of the food chain in prison culture and are considered to be worse than murderers and rapists. This is very evident in Florida where they have the most restrictive sex offender registration and sentencing laws in the nation. No matter how minor the crime a sex offender in Florida is registered for life, and after release from prison must register in-person with local sheriff’s department (Do Florida sex offender registration requirements go too far?). Comparatively, after a rapist is released from prison, he or she is not required to register themselves as rapist. While sex offenders have committed atrocious crimes, they have served their time in prison and should be given the chance to reintegrate themselves back into the community. Observing how registered sex offenders live in Florida puts their problems into perspective. A major problem facing the sex offender population is finding a stable home to live in, and due to the fact that no one, especially someone with a family wants a sex offender living near them, it is almost impossible. It is a label that is stuck with them for life and affects just about everything they try to do. Considering the sex offenders in Florida who are homeless and unemployed, perhaps they feel they have nothing else to live for. That feeling could lead them to reoffend, because in prison they at least had a bed, and three meals a day. In a way these policies can have the opposite effect, which would mean they act as a poor deterrence. Again, most sex offenders deserve the punishments they receive, but these lifelong restrictions can be too much causing them to accept their label and
