In recent years, researchers have been focusing on the issues of students multitasking while studying. Whereas, multitasking is not a recent phenomenon, but it has grown dramatically and been debated by society. Conducting numerous tasks at one time, shifting gears from one to other while studying and doing homework has become frequent behavior among students. Many students are very proud of their multitasking competency. For instance, listening to music, watching TV, and texting while doing schoolwork. In fact, multitasking slowdown the ability and performance, because human brain can only focus one thing at a time. In addition, research has uncovered that multitasking in a learning environment greatly affects the students’ performance grade level. “A survey found that 73 percent of young people can’t study without some form technology and 38% can’t last ten minutes without checking their technology” (Taylor12). The use of smart phones for texting and streaming entertainment networking sites, such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube is the activities that involve the most multitasking while learning and has become common behavior among students. However, the fact is that multitasking reduces the ability to focus and concentrate on study and lowers their quality of study as well. As parents, it is unavoidable to help your children to stop multitasking as soon as you realize that your children are doing it. The first step for overcoming multitasking is help your children get focused and set priorities of which tasks that need to be completed first. Afterwards, provide your children a quiet place and free distraction and interruption to study. Moreover, take control over technology; for example, turn off the television, music and computer while they are studying.
