Hello, I am Professor Emi, the Co-Director of the “Human Brain Project.” I will be sharing you my focus, the different perspectives of medicine and medical technology and steps in creating medicine. Including that, I will also be sharing you my job’s goal for the project that I am currently working on.
Medicines and medical technology always have two separate sections that describe itself. It is divided in advantages and disadvantages. As time goes by, scientists research to improve medicine and medical technology to increase the advantages section. However, no matter how advanced it becomes, medicine and medical technology still has both positive and negative impacts. Mostly, there is a case where something new can also have another type of negative impact too. One example of a medical technology that has both positive and negative effects to patients from history are X-rays. Before X-rays was invented, doctors had to be extra cautious. To check for anything abnormal in the body, they needed to gash the body and look inside. Nowadays, there are X-rays. Doctors have less need to cut into the body. On the other hand, there is a new negative impact: radiation. It may cause cancer and many other diseases and damages. What never changes is the fact that new technology often has both positive and negative impacts.
Another negative effect currently happening is the number of people having adverse reactions to prescribed drugs to be 2.2 million per year. The number of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed annually for viral infections is 20 million per year. This tool will be used to understand how the mind works, to study brain diseases and invent new electronics. To achieve this goal, more than 80 European institutions have joined our project. It is a large challenge for us because we are hoping that it will have an enormous impact on the health of the patients.
Scientists will continue researching to gain more knowledge to make more better medicines, procedures, ideas and inventions that improve our lives and the world. People very often debate whether technology is good or bad. Many people believe that technology can only cause harm to their lives and society, while many others strongly defend the technologies which have made their lives much more leisurely and enriching than it could have been several hundred years ago. In my opinion, both of these views are correct to an extent, but I also believe that what should be examined is not whether technology in its self is good or bad, but rather how we as humans use it.For decades now, television has been accused of contributing to the dissolution of the American family and the destruction of the minds of those who watch it. However, although the TV has been involved in this, the problem roots not with technology but rather the people who choose to let it run their lives. I believe this because it is parents, not TV sets, who choose to let their children sit in front of the television for hours upon hours, and it is the parents who do not intervene and replace TV time with quality family time.
