In the year 2014, an amount of one trillion dollars represents the collective student debt due to expensive college tuition, and it is on the rise. By 2020 student debt is expected to be an atrocious 1.4 trillion dollars (Rhinerson). Prices such as this lead to students not attending, struggling or even dropping out because they cannot afford the expenses college requires. Free college could influence several aspects of the economy and people’s lives, such as a decrease in unemployment, a more educated society and the discovery of previously looked over talent due to low income.

Although, for a portion of upcoming youth, the attainability may be at stake due to climbing academic expenses. A much larger quantity of people are now realizing this, and so the idea of free college is rapidly gaining popularity. There are a number of countries with free college tuition already. As of 2013, North Europe, Argentina, Norway, Finland, and even Germany all provide free college (“How”). The United States has had the idea to jump on board, as well. President Obama recently created a bill that would cover 75% of the tuition for two years of community college if the students can achieve the academic requirements, such as a 2.5 GPA or higher. Seeing as there are several other countries that already provide free higher education, the United States’ failure to do so eliminates a large opportunity for competitiveness (How). Another aspect regarding the subject of economic advancement that could have direct causation from free tuition is a more educated workforce. Those in poverty that either cannot afford college or are saving up so they might can afford it could then attend if tuition was not an issue. In this day and time with the high tuition, price has become more important than the actual courses and colleges. If price was no longer a stipulation, students could focus on the more important parts of college, like the actual education. This concept would lead to more people having a more stellar and eminent educational status which would then prompt a larger number of workers to take in a more sizable salary. If these people were making more money, they would be spending more money and hence a the United States being in better economic standing. College is intended for the growth of knowledge and if it were an equal opportunity, meaning that the attainability was equivalent for all, it would lead to the growth of the nation as a whole from a macro
