It all happened so quickly. At first there was nothing, then there was a plane. Suddenly, there was a subduing light, then… nothing. This is what an innocent Japanese citizen would have witnessed at the time that the U.S. dropped the bomb on Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945. The figures regarding the exact number of American lives that would’ve been lost has been highly debated, but considering the great resolve that the Japanese army had, they would almost surely have been more than those killed in Nagasaki, and that is just on the American side. I do not value American lives more than the lives of the innocent, many of whom were victims to the attack, but it is important to remember that regardless of whether we had dropped the bomb or not, we were fighting total war. Perhaps one of the most controversial topics that have ever existed is whether the U.S should have dropped the atomic bomb on Japan. To some people this is a matter of morals, while to others it is a matter of what was better politically, while some others say that it was better because it reduced the number of people that died. On August 6th, 1945, the United States of America dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in Japan. Two days later, a second bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. These two bombs were the most devastating weapons ever seen, and their effects on human beings and property were plainly horrifying. Approximately 110,000 people were killed; most of them were innocent civilians who just happened to have lived in the wrong place at the wrong time.
