Why are Native Americans a subculture in the United States?
Native Americans are a subculture because they have values, beliefs, and traditions and they live such a different life from the majority. Also they have their own reservations made for their cultural sanctuary’s.
Should they just assimilate into American culture?
I don’t believe they should assimilate into the American culture. The Navajo tribe has been around since year 1400. They have ancestors that go back many years who have been in this tribe, and to take that away from them would be cruel. They live very different lives from the American culture. Not only do they think different about the value of mother nature, they have different values, and beliefs as other.
Why would an Indian choose to live on a reservation?
An Indian may choose to live on a reservation because they have grown up there their whole lives and so have their parents, grandparents, and even their ancestors. They want to share the same values, morals, and traditions and keep their culture and beliefs alive.

Family members are having to leave reservations to find a job to support their family. Another challenge is some families don’t have fresh running water because, the government won’t allow them to get fresh water. There forth, causing the people who don’t get it they have to go to the nearest well and fill buckets up and bring it home. Another challenge is that less and less people are speaking Navajo language. It’s harder to learn and when you influenced to English daily it’s much easier to learn English. In the video the grandma says how she can’t connect as much as she wants to with her grandchildren because they don’t speak much Navajo and that is all the grandma

As Euro-Americans they expected all non-whites in the U.S. to assimilate into a Euro-American (Christian) lifestyle, without reciprocation or sympathy to the traditions and history of our native people. Our founding fathers and subsequent leaders of the United States at varying times have used suppression, segregation, aggression, and assimilation to manage what they perceived as an Indian problem, and civilize them. There are consistent patterns or themes regarding Native American world views and the differentiation of cultural elements and society. Native Americans retained control of institutional and cultural orders against the assimilation effort because all aspects of Native American societies are interrelated, guided by the broader cultural world views. Each cultural or institutional element is, in fact, overlapped with other elements, so change in one element inevitably affects the broader cultural and social complex. While adopting to a new environment and small changes was possible in the West, where social and cultural elements are separate from each other, Native Americans were faced with conflicts and a potential, large disruption of the existing social orders.
Throughout our country’s history there have been several groups who have fared less that great. Every minority group was treated unfairly, Indians were uprooted and had no control, I can’t imagine for a second being a soldier in combat, women struggled for basic rights, and many people fell victim to the changing ways of our economy, losing their jobs and fighting to survive. It seems wrong to pick one group over another, as if to say some people who were treated horribly or who faced mounting obstacles didn’t actually have it as bad as another group. But throughout all the years we’ve studied, one group that stood out to me who were dealt a horrible fate were Native Americans living in the west during the 19th century. When Americans began to expand westward, Indians unwillingly had their lives flipped upside down and changed drastically. After years of displacement, they were being forced to live in certain areas and follow certain rules, or risk their lives.
Considering historical evidence, the notion: Native –Americans was not the first inhabitant of America is a complete false. For centuries, history kept accurate and vivid accounts of the first set of people who domiciled the western hemisphere. Judging by those records, below are the first set of Native-American people who inhabited America before the arrival of another human race; the Iroquois: The Iroquois of Native Americans was one of the tribes that lived in America before other people came. Based on historical evidence, it is believed that the Native Americans came from Asia way back during the Ice Age through a land bridge of the Bering Strait. When the Europeans first set foot in America, there were about 10 million Native Americans
Towards the development of the United States of America there has always been a question of the placement of the Native Americans in society. Throughout time, the Natives have been treated differently like an individual nation granted free by the U.S. as equal U.S. citizens, yet not treated as equal. In 1783 when the U.S. gained their independence from Great Britain not only did they gain land from the Appalachian Mountains but conflict over the Indian policy and what their choice was to do with them and their land was in effect. All the way from the first presidents of the U.S. to later in the late 19th century the treatment of the Natives has always been changing. The Native Americans have always been treated like different beings, or savages, and have always been tricked to signing false treaties accompanying the loss of their homes and even death happened amongst tribes. In the period of the late 19th century, The U.S. government was becoming more and more unbeatable making the Natives move by force and sign false treaties. This did not account for the seizing of land the government imposed at any given time (Boxer 2009).

As a White American, I have been virtually unaware of the harsh living conditions that Native Americans have been enduring. This past summer I was fishing and camping at a resort in northwestern Minnesota with my family. I realized that this resort was located on the White Earth Indian Reservation. As I drove around the towns that the resort was near, I saw that the Native Americans were terribly poverty-stricken. Besides the resort that my family and I were staying at and a small casino that was nearby, most of the buildings and houses were in poor condition. The majority of the houses were trailers and not something that I would call “livable.” This raised a few questions in my mind: Why are people on Indian reservations living this way and what other things besides housing are Native Americans lacking? As I began research on these questions, I found three major issues. Poverty, health, and education are three tribulations that, at this point, remain broken on American Indian reservations.

Prior to 1850 American Indian land stretched from the Mississippi River to California. As American expansionism crept further west Indian land became smaller and smaller. The discovery of gold in 1849 in California, as well as the transcontinental railroad, only made this problem worse for the American Indian tribes. American Indian tribes on the east coast were possibly treated poorly due to certain tribes siding with the French in the French and Indian War and tribes siding with the English during the American Revolutionary War. However, there were certain people, most notably William Penn, that always tried to deal with the Indians fairly and respectably.

They are a collectivist culture which means the tribe members will work as a whole to raise children and help one another (Hodgins & Hodgins, 2013, p. 449). Under United States laws, the Government classifies Native American under the domestic dependent nations.
