There is no way to eliminate internet dangers completely, but there are ways to significantly reduce them. People continuously lie on their online dating profiles to make themselves more attractive to others. With the security feature of background checks this problem would be eliminated. Jeffrey Marsalis was able to present himself online as a fireman, trauma surgeon, and even an astronaut; this would not be possible if all online dating websites provided background checks on his information (Peters). Background checks would be able to detect that man’s criminal record, preventing him from using the website in the first place. According to the article, “The rapid abuse reporting systems will give members access to a website, email address and/or phone number to report suspected criminal activity,” so users will have the tools they need to make sure the people they meet online are not offenders (Newcomb). Some dating websites such as true.com, already provides users with the precaution of background checks. However, several popular websites and apps do not. Background checks would be used to look into every user’s histories. This would include providing proof of the person’s existence, as well as looking into a person’s criminal history. The background checks would provide users with peace of mind knowing that the people they are interacting with online are genuine and honest, and would significantly lessen the amount of predators that are able to use online dating websites. We live in the digital age. New technologies are being pushed out everyday to improve everyday life. There may even be a point where traditional social interaction and dating methods will become a rarity. Although online dating has provided users with a unique way to meet others, online dating’s lack of privacy, security, credibility, present the risk of emotional and physical danger to it’s users. There is no way to eliminate online dating from society, but there are ways to minimize the dangers it presents. We have all watched television shows, we have heard the warnings, and have read numerous articles that expose internet predators and pedophiles. Most of us are aware of the dangers surrounding children and teenagers as they navigate the internet’s virtual world. There is no shortage of predators online. Chris Hanson has a very popular show called To Catch a Predator that has helped bring awareness to the public of this heinous crime against children, and while this is extremely important to know and prevent, there is another large segment of society that is at risk too. This paper will focus on this “other” population.

These new advances are giving people the freedom to meet and integrate with others in the society in a safe fashion. However, we know that technology is not one-hundred percent safe proof. Because technology is not completely safe and is not always accurate individuals must use common sense to determine when a situation is not being used properly. It is faster and simple to post a profile and wait for a hand full of possibilities, than to go out to bars and clubs night after night looking for the “one”. Online dating advertisements on the television have a horrendous role on influencing viewers to try their services as well. However, meeting people online can be dangerous. Many scammers and lies are often told in online profiles, such as physical appearance, age, sex, and so on. Sharing private personal information on matchmaking services and or on social networking is unsafe.
If a stranger would approach someone on the street, would one casually offer personal information to him? Would one allow him to follow and record one’s activities? Although it may be obvious in the concrete world that one would not allow it, the behavior of the general population on the Internet is strikingly different. While surfing websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google, many people provide personal details to enhance their online profile? These websites retain vast amounts of personal information from their users. Although this practice benefits the user as well, unrestricted profiling can become an alarming catastrophe. Unless the threat to internet users privacy are shown to exceed the benefits, we should not regulate the internet, rather we should educate the public how to be more responsible about their identities.
The Internet has always seemed like a completely separate world, very different from reality. There seemed to be so many endless possibilities. One is the new online dating craze, which has caught my attention a number of times. One rainy afternoon, curled up in a blanket at my computer chair, I decided to investigate it. I learned that as many of the baby-boomers start to become widowed or divorced, many are looking for mates, along with many others who are looking for companionship. With the new Internet-Age, many of these individuals turn to their computer to find someone. Online relationships are a growing phenomenon in the United States as well as internationally. After doing some research I could not develop an opinion on how I felt about this new trend. I found a group of specialists who had devoted some researching to it and I invited them over for dinner to find what their opinions were and why.

According to the statistics, “One in five U.S. teenagers who regularly log on to the Internet says they have received an unwanted sexual solicitation via the Web. Solicitations were defined as requests to engage in sexual activities or sexual talk, or to give out personal sexual information. (Only 25% of those told a parent).” Online predators have the opportunity to talk freely and direct to someone on social media than in person. Imagine being a parent in this situation, who would not want an online predator coming for their child. This can cause fear on a child for many years. Social media can be a disgusting world for the youth of today.
With a simple click of a mouse, children of all ages can engage in a variety of chat rooms. As reported in MSNBC live, “Instant messaging on the computer has become the new phone for kids today. Children spend hours chatting online with their friends, and sometimes with strangers” (Hansen, 2004). Although these chat rooms are advertised as harmless communication networks designed for our youth to make new friends, there is actually no way of knowing whether a child is chatting with a 13 year old girl of a 43 year old man. According to one recent study, “one in five children will be approached by a sexual predator within in the next year; a predator who may try to set up a face-to-face meeting” (Hansen, 2004). It is this kind of instant messaging that is becoming one the internet’s greatest dangers.

With technology advances steadily in today’s society, individuals steadily advance too. One of these aspects includes dating. Individuals in today’s society hope to find companionship through online dating websites so that someday some online daters might be able to find a companion. With websites like eHarmony, Match, Christian Mingle, OkCupid, Black People Meet, and JDate, finding the one seems to be easier and more convenient than ever. Most of these websites even display statistics showing that one out of five relationships start online. The questions that should be asked, is this a better and safer option than looking for the one in person? Individuals tend to ignore the possible risks involving online dating. They are willing to release personal information from pictures of oneself, to locations of where they work, or live just for the possibility of finding a companion. The online users have to ask themselves: is the risk worth it in the end, or does the benefit outweighs the cost? When searching for a companionship through online dating websites, negative aspects such as profiles, self-presentation, self-disclosure, predators and sexual mishaps, may outweigh the positive aspects and cause more problems and strife then actual good.
