Online Dating The Internet has always seemed like a completely separate world, very different from reality. There seemed to be so many endless possibilities. One is the new online dating craze, which has caught my attention a number of times. One rainy afternoon, curled up in a blanket at my computer chair, I decided to investigate it. I learned that as many of the baby-boomers start to become widowed or divorced, many are looking for mates, along with many others who are looking for companionship. With the new Internet-Age, many of these individuals turn to their computer to find someone. Online relationships are a growing phenomenon in the United States as well as internationally. After doing some research I could not develop an opinion on how I felt about this new trend. I found a group of specialists who had devoted some researching to it and I invited them over for dinner to find what their opinions were and why. I wanted only the best, the most opinionated, and the most interested in the topic to come and join me for dinner. I wanted to ignite a conversation that would involve many different views about the subject. I decided on three people to invite to my feast. First, I chose Robin Eisner, who works for ABC, and has studied the effects of spending time on the Internet. Next, I chose Laura Koss-Feder, who had interviewed several online couples and understands some of the positive and negative attributes of online dating. I also invited Erica D. Rowell for her knowledge and the studies she has done on online dating. About a week before they all came to dinner, I began to plan what I would make. After having talked to each of them several times on the telephone, I could tell they may de... ... middle of paper ... ...et them up on, but they often do not develop into anything. They are often surrounded by married couples and may not know a lot of single people, so dating can be very difficult. In their loneliness, they turn to the Internet for companionship. Many may go just to look for a friend, but often they might end up meeting someone they want to date (par. 3). I think this is great for older people since they are often wiser so they know who to trust and are more careful when disclosing information to people online. They know they cannot trust just anybody. Younger people, who have not dated much or have not experienced true love, might fall for the words of another online, and this cold lead to disastrous effects. I would not advise anybody my age to date online, but for some older people I think it might be a great way to meet people as long as they are careful.
Right now, the U.S. has a National Instant Background Check System; however, it contains many flaws. This system is meant to act as a filter to stop the wrong people from having guns. In 2007, the Bipartisan legislation was passed to strengthen this system. It relies on data supplied by the states, but the data is often incomplete and inadequate (Merino 104). Unlicensed gun sellers have also created a dangerous loophole. The law makes an exception for gun sellers who aren’t federally licensed gun dealers. These sellers sell guns informally through venues such as gun shows, and are not required to run background checks. This is a dangerous loophole where people who should not have guns can get them (“Gun”). Senator Frank R. Lautenberg once stated, commenting on the gun sh...
When thinking back on my past experiences in the dating scene, it’s crazy to see how much things have changed over the years. About ten years ago, I would have never thought that online dating would have grown to be as popular as it is today. It was considered a risky and almost taboo thing to do in the beginning. Now it seems that online dating services are just about everywhere. From the bigger dating services providers, such as E-Harmony and Zoosk, to the smaller services such as online personal classifieds, social media, and phone apps, it’s easier than ever to find and meet people who are interested in dating. I have dated online myself, even in the beginning stages of the online dating scene, and have had both good and bad experiences.
Background checks can be evaded. A straw sole is someone buying something at a place to see if they are bad sellers. Few guns in a crime have came from a gun show. A problem with background checks is it's about history. United States has a pre-crime bureau to evade crime. Some killers can buy their guns legally. Consequences towards hunting and sports shooting. Nra spent around 5 million to defeat background checks. Third issue is the steal law resources for paperwork.
The government has a large say on what occurs in a country. Though laws in Canada are strict about possession of guns, the laws in the Unites States of America are very slack and need to be changed. To lessen the amount of shootings, the government needs to keep guns out of the hands of people who have no real need for them. The boldest and most clean-cut way to solve this problem would be to change the constitution to deny the general public the right to bear arms (Stevens, 2014). This may be the best way to end gun violence, however it is unlikely that a massive constitutional change such as this will come into effect hastily. So instead of working with the past we can work to create new laws for the future. One way to make sure that fewer guns are put into the hands of civilians is background checks. Some states have already implemented background checks, which make it so that anyone with a mental illness, restraining order, or small crimes can not purchase guns (Sen & Panjamapirom, 2012). The homicide rates in those s...
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about gun control. In fact it is one of the most hotly debated topics in our society today, but one thing that most people can agree on is background check for the purchase of firearms. But there are a lot of hurdles for a background check system, a lot of things to consider and a lot of problem with how it is set up today. Another battleground for the debate surrounding the misguidedly named “Gun Show Loophole.”
According to a 2013 survey, there are about 310 million guns in the country. America has more people owning firearms than any other country in the world. 79% of firearms that were used in mass shootings were legally purchased unfortunately. Sadly, 75% of people used semi automatic guns to kill people in incidents. Assault weapons were used in 40% of incidents. People should not be able to get their hands on assault rifles or semi automatic guns; America needs to change gun laws. According to a 2013 survey, many people who decide to take lives have shown signs of mental illness, but in only two cases was there a prior diagnosis. It needs to be required that people must have a background check done for gun sales between private individuals and licensed dealers. Some studies have found that reducing access to guns would result in less crime. John Lott who wrote More guns, Less crimes, completed a study in the 1990’s that said the right to carry firearms decreased homicides up until 1992. A recent study done says that there is no evidence that the right to carry guns reduces violence (Stray, 2013). In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a 15-year-old boy was charge as an adult for homicide, carrying a firearm without a license, and illegal possession of a firearm. Police do not know how the boy obtained a gun. A 15 year old boy should not be able to get a hold of
As technology continues to advance in our society, we find ourselves becoming increasingly occupied with the possibilities of the internet. As a result, there are more chances of online interactions than ever before. According to Whitty & Carr (2006), online dating is becoming the source of a vast amount of romantic relationships. Websites have become quite precise in the way they pair potential partners, using research driven models. These sites are simple to access and navigate to the consumer. However, what about possible safety issues that arise with online dating? In this paper, several possible explanations will be provided to unearth this dilemma. Madden & Lenhart (2006) discovered that about 66% of individuals who use the internet,
The Internet is used to look up information, to e-mail your friends, and now even to find your soul mate. Today, verified by “Reuters”, “Herald News”, “PC World”, and the “Washington Post”, 47.6 percent of women are turning to online dating (“Online Dating” 1). Why settle for someone in town, when you can meet someone online whom you may be better suited for? Busy lifestyles are also a reason why dating sites have increased in popularity. It is faster and simple to post a profile and wait for a hand full of possibilities, than to go out to bars and clubs night after night looking for the “one”. Online dating advertisements on the television have a horrendous role on influencing viewers to try their services as well. However, meeting people online can be dangerous. Many scammers and lies are often told in online profiles, such as physical appearance, age, sex, and so on. Sharing private personal information on matchmaking services and or on social networking is unsafe.
Online dating is on the rise of becoming a world wide phenomenon. Millions of people sign up each year to trendy dating websites such as Match, eHarmony, and Zoosk. Instead of being traditionally introduced to potential partners through family or friends, individuals are joining online dating communities. From young adults to elders, dating websites offer a wide spectrum of individuals from various cultures, religions, financial status, and professions. The total number of people who have once tried online dating is a little over 41 million. (“Online Dating Statistics”). However, research studies and surveys find that online dating can also cause numerous relationship and personal issues, such as trust issues, false identity, and infidelity, particularly for those who already suffer from a lack of confidence.
Based on a research of Online Dating & Relationships, Smith and Duggan stated that the ways of finding partners have been changed with the times. In the past, people used matchmaking, arranged marriages and printed personal ads. With the rapid technology advancement, there are alternative methods - online dating sites and smart phone dating apps. To compare with the people who date traditionally, people who date online are active to choose their dream man or woman by browsing the others profiles (9).
Dating nowadays has evolved into something similar to a math equation. Technology has changed society and culture so much in the 21st century that something which did not seem normal probably 30 years ago seems mundane now: meeting people via computer. In order to find the most compatible person, suddenly people are not able to find “the one” and need the help of a computer to tell them who their personality matches with, causing many people to not develop proper social skills along with confidence. People have different relationship goals which they wish to achieve, be it through either traditional or online dating. Although traditional and online dating have many similarities, at the same time they are very different when it comes to the
In recent years, online dating has become very popular with 1-in-5 Americans aged 25-34 years old using one or more of the many popular dating sites and apps, such as match.com, OkCupid, and PlentyOfFish. With the stigma of online dating gone, it’s turned out to be a great way to date, have fun, and potentially fall in love.
With technology advances steadily in today’s society, individuals steadily advance too. One of these aspects includes dating. Individuals in today’s society hope to find companionship through online dating websites so that someday some online daters might be able to find a companion. With websites like eHarmony, Match, Christian Mingle, OkCupid, Black People Meet, and JDate, finding the one seems to be easier and more convenient than ever. Most of these websites even display statistics showing that one out of five relationships start online. The questions that should be asked, is this a better and safer option than looking for the one in person? Individuals tend to ignore the possible risks involving online dating. They are willing to release personal information from pictures of oneself, to locations of where they work, or live just for the possibility of finding a companion. The online users have to ask themselves: is the risk worth it in the end, or does the benefit outweighs the cost? When searching for a companionship through online dating websites, negative aspects such as profiles, self-presentation, self-disclosure, predators and sexual mishaps, may outweigh the positive aspects and cause more problems and strife then actual good.
Dating really changed in the few last years and meeting people online became not uncommon or just for young people only. But everyone now can use it to find their dates and meet new people.
The human need for affiliation creates the challenges and rewards of finding acquaintances, forming close friendships, as well as intimate relationships. Through technological advances cyberspace, or the internet, has become a place of multiple opportunities for people to be able to fulfill that need for affiliation. Websites, chat rooms, and online communities are just some examples of virtual platforms for people to seek others, come together, and find that special someone. These opportunities can result in positive outcomes allowing people to achieve what or whom they were seeking, but they can also result in harm to themselves and others, resulting with damaging consequences. Cyberspace does not come with a warning label. People who use the internet as a means to seek relationships are at risk of being exposed to positive as well as negative results. Being made aware of some of those risks and dangers, and realizing that forming relationships on the internet is not all fun and games, may be ways to help promote a positive future for cyberspace as a place to form successful relationships.
