In the article, “The Plague of Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty”, written by Kimberly Embleton and Doris Small-Helfer, the authors discuss the well-known subject of plagiarism. The authors not only define plagiarism, but they also discuss the different ways in which the Internet has played a role in the plagiarism problem, as well as how teachers, professors, instructors also have established ways to combat this educational, or not–so-educational epidemic of academic dishonesty. The authors’ purpose is to raise awareness to the increase of plagiarism, as well as ways that faculty can not only combat the issue, but also educate students on the value of citations around someone else’s words. This is strong evidence that the problem is on the rise. Cheating is not achieving! A student, who cheats his or her way through academics, is hardly doing himself or herself a favor! In paragraphs 16 to 18 the authors address the fact that buying term papers or having someone write one for you don’t really pay. They use the example of a student that might not be all that articulate but then go and write a scholarly essay, Embleton and Small-Helfer raise the idea that this would raise prodigious question. One of the ways in which faculties are preventing plagiarism is by requiring student to show their progress in the writing process. The authors pose that this avoids the possibility of someone downloading or buying a paper, but also to help student stay honest in the development of the assignment. Plagiarisms can happen by accident. If a student happens to present plagiarized work, it should first and foremost be seen as a teaching opportunity rather than opportunity for castigation or dismissal, rather, teacher should take the opportunity to teach student the value of giving credit to another persons work or
