For my museum selection I decided to attend Texas State University’s Wittliff Collection. When I arrived, there was no one else there besides me and the librarian. To be honest, I probably would have never gone to an art museum if my teacher didn’t require me to. This was my first time attending the Wittliff Collection, thus I asked the librarian, “Is there any other artwork besides Southwestern and Mexican photography?” She answered, “No, the Wittliff is known only for Southwestern and Mexican photography.” I smiled with a sense of embarrassment and continued to view the different photos. As I walked through Wittliff, I became overwhelmed with all of the different types of photography. There were so many amazing pieces that it became difficult to select which one to write about. However, I finally managed to choose three unique photography pieces by Alinka Echeverria, Geoff Winningham, and Keith Carter.
The “Photo Scavenger Hunt” is an activity which helps with team bonding. The materials needed for this activity are a camera per group and a list of items to take pictures of. The objective of this game is to have one group take the most pictures of the listed items. Each team playing this game will have 15 to 20 minutes to take the pictures. Today technology allows us to construct structures that we would never have been able to make in the past. Some of the creations are impressive based on what they accomplish but others are masterpieces in themselves. Man’s capability to build such tall buildings, as the skyscrapers we are familiar with covering our cities today, is a major expression of the advancements we have made as a culture. The power necessary to build such tall structures inspired competition between architects to see who could build the tallest one. One skyscraper that has inspired many and served as a model, for high rise buildings that were created after, is the Chrysler Building. The Chrysler Building serves as an identifying mark to anyone that views the New York City skyline. The history surrounding the Chrysler Building is almost as intricate as the artwork and engineering of the building itself. Today it elicits a reaction from anyone who passes by just as it did when it was first created.
In Perchance to Dream, Franzen writes about his struggle to “engage with the culture” in his writings and subsequently ends up “torturing” his story by overloading it with every possible social issue, yet Baker produces an culturally engaging novel seemingly effortlessly, without agonizing over the need to incorporate and satirize dozens of social ills. Something that makes our booth unique is the gorgeous tapestries and colorful decor we like to put together. It helps to inspire us as artists and creates a good atmosphere for customers. The other face painters have carts and usually try to rush the process but luckily we have a large area for our customers to sit down and relax. The ground is covered in yellow hay, the ceiling is a large white parachute, and every other inch is filled with vibrant colors. The back of the booth is similar to the front, but has a small kitchen made over a large tree that had fallen many years ago. We decorate and work around the nature that is already there, to set up a cozy home for the twenty or so people that stay yearly. Peter Nicks and William Hirsch’s 2012 documentary film, The Waiting Room, follows the lives of patients, doctors, and staff in a hospital in California. The hospital is a safety net hospital meaning that it provides care to low-income, uninsured populations. The documentary examines the obstacles faced by people who live without healthcare in addition to showing the public what goes in a safety net hospital. The Waiting Room fits into the finger categories of government and politics and science and technology. The most relevant category is government and politics. Healthcare and insurance have played large roles in the government for years. In fact, ObamaCare, the president’s plan for health care reform was one of the root causes of the 2013 government shutdown. This draws attention to just how large and important the congressional healthcare debate truly is. The documentary also fits under the finger category of science and technology. The Waiting Room discusses the technological and scientific innovations found in today’s hospitals. Additionally, it references some of the new methods being used to treat diseases that are prevalent in society. This is particularly significant because these new technologies and treatment methods are being used to save lives every day. The implications of the Waiting Room and safety net hospitals are not limited to finger categories; they are evident in tens of thousands of hospitals throughout the world.
It is considered that photography only became widely available to the public when the Kodak Eastman Company introduced the box shaped Brownie Camera in 1900. (Baker, n.p.) Its features became more refined since its original placing on the market; one of the reasons why it has become considered the birth of public photography is because of the processing. Using a similar image capture system, the brownie exposed the light to a 120mm roll of film, which could be wound round, meaning six photographs could be taken before the slides needed removing. The first Brownie used a six-exposure cartridge that Kodak processed for the photographer. (Kodak.com, n.d.) Realistically, the armature photographers did not need to understand darkroom processes, they could simply use capture the subjects, and send it to be developed. The cameras were relatively affordable, targeting many different markets, which is apparent from their advertisements. Figure 2 Is an advertisement from for the Eastman Kodak Company’s Brownie Camera; It states in bold lettering “Operated by any school boy or girl” which emphasis how it was targeted for amateur use.

Sounds obvious, sadly, even some professional wedding photographers fail at this challenge. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, it is far easier to get your guests correctly positioned by asking them nicely, rather than ordering them around. Getting to know the whole bridal party and both families makes it a lot easier to get natural photographs. Who wants to be told to smile all day?! A laugh and a joke, a funny story and people smile naturally. Quite often I am asked which side does the Grooms button hole go. It's not about being the photographer, it's about being the go to wedding guy (or girl). Please do make sure, no matter how brilliant or how cheap your photographer is, that then have a personality that is easy to get along
