One of the most famous British naturalists and geologists, Charles Darwin developed and proved a theory that changed the world’s point of view. Darwin was most known for his theory of evolution. One of the main ideas of his theory was natural selection (“Charles Darwin”). He traveled the world studying different specimens and noticed their similarities and differences. He believed that all living things gradually evolved from common ancestors.
He claims that the breeders of animals and plants have had a profound impact with the changes they created among domesticated species. Darwin used the common practice of breeding animals as a way to introduce artificial selection in order to help the readers of 1859 understand the possibility of nature also being capable of producing similar changes through the same selective process. Darwin is firm that his theory of variation and inheritance plays a vital role in human reproduction. However, these kinds of ideas were treated as absurd as there was no direct evidence at the time that supported the belief of genetics. The idea was that people were made up of genetic variables and that each gene would be passed on as a unit to the next generation.
I. Introduction Evolution is a universal postulate to which all theories, hypotheses, and systems must follow in order to be significant and accurate. It is considered to be a light which illuminates all facts, a course which all lines of thought must follow (Dobzhansky). The man who discovered this life-changing concept was named Charles Robert Darwin. From his theories on the explanation of natural selection, to the variation of species, Darwin shook the world by proving Earth was much older than previously assumed, and the creatures that dwell on this planet have changed over the years.
In his book, “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection”, Charles Darwin, an English naturalist, proposed the theory of natural selection or popularly known as ‘Darwinism’ derived from the idea of artificial selection. Alfred Russel Wallace, another scientist also had a similar idea. Natural selection states that in nature, organisms that are best adapted to a given set of environmental conditions are the only ones most likely to survive. The principles of evolution are the basics that began enhancements in crops, livestock, and farming techniques. Understanding evolution is also central to the advancement of medicine. Another part of evolution called Natural selection accounts for the rise in pests that are invulnerable to pesticides we use. You could say that Charles Darwin has influenced our knowledge of life on Earth more than anyone else. He is an English naturalist who was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 2, 1809 and lived till 1882.
This is what Charles Darwin would later call natural selection. Charles Darwin also showed how new species were created on the acts of evolution. It is easily explained by having big differences from the effect of natural selection, which were considered to be new species. So back in the beginning, before the effects of evolution had occurred there was just one specie, which evolved to make the species that we know today. So somehow all species are somewhat connected.
It led biologists to concentrate on the diversity of organisms, their origins and their relation, their similarities and their differences, their geographical distribution and their adaptation to various environments. Darwin (1859) arrived at two main conclusions. • All species on earth descend from ancestral species and he presents a mechanism explaining evolution called natural selection. • Natural selection results in adaptive evolution (prevalence of hereditary characteristics favouring the survival and the reproduction of organisms in different environments). Evolution: Historical Controversy In order to fully understand Darwin’s vision, it is important to understand the historical context and compare it to the previous ideas on Earth and life on Earth.
(C.Darwin, 1859) Two notable scientists associated with the theory of evolution include Charles Darwin and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. Charles Darwin contributed majorly to the evolutionary theory and was the first to consider the concept of natural selection. The evolutionary theory states that evolutionary change comes through the production of genetic variation in each generation and survival of individuals with different combinations of these characters. Individuals with characteristics which increase their probability of survival will have more opportunities to reproduce and their offspring will also benefit from the heritable, advantageous characteristic. So over time these variants will spread through the population.
He was the one who showed law in organic and inorganic species evolution. As it turned out, the work of Lamarck was quite influential on Darwin. Lamarck's views on inheritance of characteristics can be seen in Darwin's accounts of natural selection. When Lamarck wrote of transmutation, Darwin followed with his beliefs of the mutability of species. As well, Darwin had used Lamarck's ideas on use and disuse of organs.
