The Official Doctrine is a widely believed religion based description of the “internal” human mind and “external” human body. It is derived from Renee Descartes, a famous and well respected dualist. Dualists believe that the mind and body are separate entities that are ordinarily linked together until death. Therefore, a human being is both a body and a mind until the body dies. The mind exists in time and the body exists in both time and space. All matter that exists in space, including human bodies, is governed by the same mechanical laws. The conscious acts of the mind are not physically existent because they cannot be observed by others in space; therefore consciousness does not exist in the physical world, it exists in the mind. Duelists believe that people live two different lives, a private mental life and a public physical life. For example, a flower can be seen by two people at the same time using a component of the body, the optical nerve, if the flower is present in space. The flower is consciously viewed differently by both people, especially if one person’s optical nerve is impaired. The image of the same flower existing in both people’s minds is different and cannot be viewed by the other person through physical means. The image of flower, the way each party witnessed it, can be non-optically viewed in their own mind many times through retrospection. The official doctrine states that the flower being envisioned retrospectively by both people is immune from illusion, confusion or doubt, because the physical component is taken away. Ryle provides an example of a category mistake that is committed by people who can apply concepts in certain situations, but by rely too heavily on abstract thoughts that cause room for error. He explains that “John Doe may be a relative, a friend, an enemy or stranger to Richard Roe; but he cannot be any of these things to the Average Taxpayer”. Conceptually, John Doe could engage in discussions about the Average Taxpayer, yet he could never run into him on the street, as he could Richard Roe. If John Doe recognizes the Average Taxpayer as a fellow citizen, he is stating that he is a ghost. Therefore, relating situations of Richard Roe to the Average Taxpayer is not logical. Just as relating concepts of the mechanical world to the physical world is not logical.
The philosophical theory of dualism holds that mind and body are two separate entities. While dualism presupposes that the two ‘substances’ may interact, it contrasts physicalism by refusing to denote correlation between body and mind as proof of identity. Comparing the two theories, dualism’s invulnerable proof of the existence of qualia manages to evade arguments from physicalism. While a common argument against qualia—non-physical properties defined in Jackson’s Knowledge Argument—targets the unsound nature of epiphenomenalism, this claim is not fatal to the theory of dualism as it contains claims of causation and fails to stand resolute to the conceivability of philosophical zombies. This essay argues that epiphenomenalism, while often designated as a weakness when present in an argument, can remain in valid arguments from qualia.
Richard Taylor explained why the body and the mind are one, and why they are not two separate substances. In the article “The Mind as a Function of the Body”, Taylor divides his article in a number of sections and explains clearly why dualism, or the theory that the mind and the body are separate is not conceivable. In one of these sections it is explained in detail the origin of why some philosophers and people believe in dualist metaphysics. As stated by Taylor “when we form an idea of a body or a physical object, what is most likely to come to mind is not some person or animal but something much simpler, such as a stone or a marble”(133). Based on the assumption that our mind can be spatially divided there is no way to prove this because the only way the mind can be divided is in space and we can’t verify this to be true.
The Doctrine of Ethos states that music effects character and emotion of man by way of morals or ethics. It was arranged into certain scales, each with a certain characteristic. Specific scales were said to be able to inspire rage or sadness. Some were said to inspire happiness, and one was even said to weaken the mind due to its simplicity. Greek music, of which the Doctrine of Ethos specifically talked about, wasn’t just solely instrumental. Improvising, they usually incorporated lyrics and even dance. Music was studied by the Greeks on a level that would be considered excessive in our society by all but our musicologists, ethnomusicologist, music theorists, and a small minority that take their love of music to more than just an aesthetic level. In our world, a world of empiricism and skepticism, the Doctrine of Ethos may sound a bit hard to believe. It may even sound magical and mystical, but I feel that it has some deep roots in truth. Philosophers, musicians, and even the layman have all theorized about the effect of music on the mind, body, and soul. After all, as William Congreve said in his The Mourning Bride, “Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.”
Dualism claims that the mind is a distinct nonphysical thing, a complete entity that is independent of any physical body to which it is temporarily attached. Any mental states and activities, as well as physical ones, originate from this unique entity. Dualism states that the real essence of a person has nothing to do with his physical body, but rather from the distinct nonphysical entity of the mind. The mind is in constant interaction with the body. The body's sense organs create experiences in the mind. The desires and decisions of the mind cause the body to act in certain ways. This is what makes each mind's body its own.
This paper will discuss the dualism’s Divisibility Argument. This argument relies on Leibniz’s Law and uses a different property to prove the distinctness of brain states of mental states. Mary, who is a materialist, presents several objections to that argument. Her main objection corresponds to the first/third-person approach. But, “human persons have an ‘inner’ dimension that is just as important as the ‘outer’ embodiment” (Cortez, 71). The “inner” element cannot be wholly explained by the “outer” embodiment, but it does give rise to inimitable facets of the human life, such as human dignity and personal identity. The mind-body problem entails two theories, dualism and physicalism. Dualism contends that distinct mental and physical realms exist, and they both must be taken into account. Its counterpart (weak) physicalism views the human as being completely bodily and physical, encompassing no non-physical, or spiritual, substances.
