There were detrimental effects, such as societal and environmental ramifications, due to the United States using atomic bombs on Japan. Two bombs were ordered to be dropped by President Harry S. Truman in 1945 in order to bring World War II to a quick end and not prolong the war. On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first deployed atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Following this event, a second bomb was dropped on August 9, 1945 by the US on the city of Nagasaki. The effects of the nuclear attack on Japan were massive destruction to the land, harmful effects of radiation poisoning, and food rationing. One major detrimental effect on Japan and its people was the massive destruction to the land. The first bomb, made of uranium, was dropped on the city enter in Hiroshima, an area with wooden residential structures and places of business. “Almost 63% of the buildings in Hiroshima were completely destroyed after the bombing and nearly 92% of the structures in the city had been either destroyed or damaged by blast and fire.” These factors …show more content…

The hilly geography of the city made the effects less damaging and “the excessive damage from the bombing was limited to the Urakami Valley and part of downtown Nagasaki.” However, the bomb, made of plutonium, still destroyed around 22.7% of Nagasaki 's buildings by consuming them with flames. This demolition contributed to the death toll of 80,000 Japanese people. Furthermore, while the bombs were only dropped on two Japanese cities, there were 119 war-devastated cities that includes Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
