Brittany is a 16-year-old Caucasian female in her sophomore year of high school. She currently works as a hostess at Chili’s twice a week and is on the varsity cheerleading team. Brittany is a pretty girl with pale blue eyes and long blonde hair. She has a history of ADHD/ ADD and suffered from a concussion due to a fall in cheerleading last year that she has been cleared for by her primary physician Dr. West. Brittany enjoys spending her free time when she has any with her friends Ashley and Samantha. Brittany has always been the more up tight and realistic type of girl while her two friends were boy crazy and wild. Brittany lives at home with her single mother and 3 younger siblings. This model is used by the nursing students at Newberry College as a way to identify and assess patients individually by looking at their past, present, and future in relation to their overall health care. An important assumption of the Newman theory is: ‘‘each client system is unique, a composite of factors and characteristics within a given range of responses.’’ (pg 283.) Given that this model can be used for any client I will be using it to assess Brittany the young women in the case study that was raped at a high school party. The stressors are anything that could decrease the effectiveness of the client’s normal line of defense/ flexible line of defense. Intrasystem includes stressors within the client so Brittany’s would be ADHD, ADD, and depression. The cluster of emotions or emotional response that are specific to extreme stress surrounding sexual assault is called rape trauma syndrome. This type of response to stress is similar to that of posttraumatic stress disorder. () The intersystem includes the external environments that are in close proximity that occur between two client systems. Brittany stressors in this system include living with her single mother and three siblings, her father passing away recently, and recently being raped at a school party. The last system extrasystem includes the external environments that are at a distant range outside the control of the clients system.
