In today’s society, I believe that domestic violence is either ignored or taken as a grain of salt. It is teaching the generations to come that it is acceptable to put your hands negatively on your spouse. In my point of view it is not okay no matter what the situation may be. I chose the subject of intimate partner violence because of hearing about specific cases such as Ray Rice’s a few years back really touched me in a negative way. This one in particular makes me cringe knowing that even professional athletes who are supposed to be role models to people all around the world are putting this kind of negative image out there for everyone to see. 123). On the other hand, violence is the intentional physical harm of another person that occurs between these people. Any of these people have the capability to hurt their spouse in a variety of different ways. For example, physical violence includes hitting, slapping, kicking, punching, and choking, but not all intimate partner violence has to be done physically. Yelling at or verbally degrading a partner may also be considered as violent and this is known as emotional abuse. Another form of violence is sexual violence which includes unwanted sexual contact, sexual coercion, and rape. There are also two types of intimate partner violence which are intimate terrorism and situational couple violence. Intimate terrorism deprives from the need for power and control in the relationship. The abuse involves severe, persistent and frequent abuse that tends to worsen over time. Situational couple violence is typically perceived as the common violence between couples. Rational choice theory would best fit here because Rice clearly had to have a decision making process before doing what he did. I believe that he would have done this by weighing out the potential costs and benefits of an illegal act, but I don’t think he clearly thought on this for a long period of time because of their scenario. On February 15th, 2014 Ray Rice and Janay Palmer got into a fight which they were then both arrested with simple assault (CNN, 2014). It was only four days later that TMZ released out the videos of what happened that evening. In the video clip it starts off by the two entering in to the elevator. After inside he strikes her repetitively where she then hits her head off the railing after such a traumatic blow to the head and drops to the ground where she is then knocked out. He is then seen to pick her up and drag her out of the elevator until hotel staff stumbles upon the scene. On July 24th, Rice receives a two game suspension for his actions. Only a two game suspension for beating his wife? People all across the world are stunned by the disciplinary action that is released after what was seen from the video. This showed people that obviously the law enforcement does not care about a man beating his wife even if he is a professional athlete, but because he was such a talented athlete it simply did not matter. The NFL did not want to believe what they had seen. Instead they wanted to set it aside and act as if it did not happen, but that was not about to happen.
