The Great Depression had a major effect on families. The third letter that was very interesting and an important historical document. The letter is by a ten-year-old who did not receive gifts for Christmas. The letter is important, because it shows how the Great Depression was having a negative impact on parents and children. For instance, parents were not able to provide for their children. The letter displays how children processed the depression. For instance, not receiving Christmas gifts because their parents do not have jobs or money to afford gifts. More simply, children noticed the depression because they were deprived and being treated differently by their parents. The letter also shows how children expectations were not being met.

The Great Depression is a an era when the US economy was at its lowest. It is after the Roaring 20s. The depression was caused mainly because of the crash of the stock market in 1929 and the government’s failed attempts to help the people. Many people’s belongings are bought with credit so they lost all their money and most of their things when the bank system failed. Others lost their jobs and many men left their families because they felt ashamed that they can’t support their family. The social fabric of the Great Depression changed greatly from the previous era. The changes in the social, the political, and the economic part of the US are part of the change in the social fabric.

In American society today, childhood is considered a time for learning, exploration, and a chance for a child to make his or her mark on the world. Leading up to the Great Depression, however, childhood for working class children was seen in a different light. Working class children felt pressure to provide for their family, which inhibited them from getting an education and branching out on their own, while middle class children had a greater prospect for education because of the difference in wealth. The Great Depression often seems very distant to people of the 21st century. This article is a good reminder of potential problems that may reoccur. The article showed in a very literal way the idea that a depression can bring a growing country to its knees. The overall ramifications of the event were never discussed in detail, but the historical significance is that people's lives were put on hold while they tried to struggle through an extremely difficult time.
During the Great Depression receiving an education was becoming more and more difficult for southerners.
