The MTV series 16 And Pregnant and its follow up series titled Teen Mom is a documentary like series that first aired in 2009 on June 11 and since then has had many seasons and sequels to follow it. Each episode in the series focuses on several young girls for 5-7 moths while they have to deal with the struggle of teenage pregnancy and “life after labor”. The initial idea or the show was to promote teen pregnancy prevention but, with many of the girls behaving scandalously and recklessly during the series, the show has become one of the most controversial on MTV.
16-year-old Maci Bookout is a high school junior from Chattanooga, Tennessee and she is 16 & pregnant. Prior to the birth, the episode focuses on her boyfriend Ryan Edwards’s
For instance Farrah Abraham, who in the show is usually seen boy hunting, fighting with her mom and sister, and nearly neglecting her responsibilities as a mother (find specifics). She lets her daughter “do her own thing while she does hers” Her life after 16 & Pregnant isn’t much different. . “Over the past year-and-a-half, former Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham has released two adult films, been booted from ‘Teen Mom’, appeared on Couples Therapy (solo), hawked a line of sex toys, and been criticized for not taking care of her daughter, among other things”. (Majesk) But the thing about Farrah is that she doesn’t regret it at all. Farrah can be seen as the antithesis to Maci. In recent years she has used her popularity to make a name for herself instead of helping other teen girls. Recently she debuted as a singer at the 340 Nightclub in Pomona, California, and was cast in the movie “Axeman II: Overkill’’, and is currently working on her “porn career”. It can be said that Farrah aka “the most irresponsible 16 & pregnant star”, and others like her, are one of the main reasons that 16 & Pregnant has such a bad name and a reputation for being the show that generates some of the most undeserving teen stars
Maci, who did not, is now the mother of a five year old son. Nevertheless, she proactively speaks out about teen pregnancy prevention to help other young girls. Yet some of the girls who come from the show do not always leave with the best intentions or become great role models. Like Ferrah, who used the show to skyrocket herself to fame. The show also caused conflict due to the fact that a majority of the series is faked or reenacted and edited to appear real. Be that as it may, teen pregnancies in the US have been progressively dropping in recent years and continue to drop, although no one can identify whether that is causation or a correlation. Even so one thing remains, 16 & Pregnant to this day still one of MTV most controversial TV
“Everything is going to be O.K.,” my mother said, before walking into her bedroom and crying her eyes out. Throughout my teenage years I had it made. I had security, support of my family, and everything I could ask for. When I turned 16, I found out something that would change my life forever, I was pregnant. Being pregnant at a young age is a very difficult thing to go through. It can be hard mentally, financially and also physically.

For example, Aubrey, Behm-Morawitz and Kim state, “Girls who watched "16 and Pregnant,"… reported a lower perception of their own risk for pregnancy and a greater perception that the benefits of teen pregnancy outweigh the risks” (qtd. in Lori Harwood). In other words, due to the fanciful perception this program transmits,
Teen mom and 16 and Pregnant are TV shows about pregnant teens that are struggling to raise their kid and going through different obstacles in order to graduate high school and become successful. Both of the shows relate to teen pregnancy because they’re both shows about pregnant teens. “Instead of really helping viewers understand the day to day responsibilities of attending to a new infant, MTV chooses to focus on the girls’ volatile relationships with the babies’ fathers or their body piercings and tattoo,” Parents Television Council Director, Melissa Henson wrote on CNN.
In 1990, teen pregnancy rates hit an all time high. The cover of one issue of the Chicago Tribune from October of 1990 decried the growth and lamented the “State and Federal Funding [is] failing to turn the tide” (Stein). The article points out clearly what the author believes the issue at the time to have been. “[The teen mothers’] pre-mothering days… were marked by ignorance, fear, curiosity, poverty, instability and rebellion.” The resounding opinion laid the fault of teen pregnancy on mothers not being careful or being too wild. It is from this stereotype of women, often poor or of color, being too foolish to understand the consequences of their decisions. TV Shows like 16 and Pregnant depend on and further this trend by showing young women, who often had a history of underage drinking or drug abuse, who are often Black or Latina, or who come from impoverished backgrounds struggling with the effects of underage pregnancy.

Getting pregnant at an early age makes a teen mom go through various difficulties. A lot of tragedies occur with family, friends, and even the father of the baby. 91% of teen moms did not plan to have sex or any sexual contact at all until they drank alcohol (Langham, NP). One thing for sure is that it is not easy to raise your own child when you yourself are still a child. It is very complicated for everyone, but in the end the parents of that child become stronger and have more knowledge and their stories can teach others to avoid making the same mistake.

Your child comes to you and tells you that she needs to have a serious talk with you and your wife. She is frowning, sucking up her tears, and speechless. You see that there is nothing good that is going to be said in this conversation. “I’m pregnant!” she says. Your teenager comes to you that claiming that they are going to have a child. You are going to be a grandparent. You start to think what you did wrong, how she is going to balance school, the child, and her life. Many parents can agree that they would never want to see their child raise another child. A good number of families can have a teenager that has put themselves in this position and can all agree that is not an easy challenge. The show, “16 and Pregnant," is a great way to discourage
Teenage pregnancy is a problem for all involved. It truly puts a great strain on the young parents, especially the new teenage mother, and also on the new grandparents, who more often than not, end up help to raise the new baby while the young parents are at school, or while they are out enjoying being a teenager and socializing with their friends. The spread of this epidemic needs to be stopped before more young adults dreams are dashed by the responsibility of parenthood. Through strong parental guidance and support, appropriate media exposure and more readily available birth control, this issue can be brought under control.

Pregnancy is continuing to be a typical occurrence with teenage girls. It is becoming more and more likely for girls to have children during their teen years, than it is for women who are above the age of 22. It is now the new normal to expect teen pregnancy before graduating among girls. MTV has even broadcasted a television show on the lives of teen moms and raising a child. Just like the television show on MTV, the reasons of why the media believes the situation of teen pregnancy should be brought to attention can be viewed in a variety ways. Social media stamps teen pregnancy as a negative choice of life even though it is commonly seen. An advertisement was published to the public on how teen pregnancy can affect the possibility of their
Back in the day teenage pregnancy was always seen as unacceptable. When a teen became pregnant they were often rejected or looked down upon by their parents, friends, and others in the community. Some pregnant teens were even sent to schools specifically for expecting mothers. It seems severe to send off a child that is expecting a child but the media today is taking it to even more of an extreme. Currently, some teens are being treated like celebrities by the media when they become pregnant, for example the MTV shows called “Teen Mom” and “16 and pregnant”, possibly portraying that it is okay to do, or maybe that they’ll get famous on television for it. These pregnant teens are shown to face many hardships in their everyday lives, but on the other hand it is reality televis...
