Afghan women and lack of rights The book The Lovers: Afghanistan’s Romeo and Juliet, by Rod Nordland, is a true story about two couples who ran away from home to get married. Zakia and Ali are from two different tribes. As they got older they started to develop feelings for each other. After months of planning, they decide to run away. They lived and still live in a constant state of fear of being found by Zakia’s family. They have promised to avenge their honor and bring her back home so she can get what she deserved. Zakia and Ali are still hiding.
The name Afghanistan means,“Lands of Afghans”. (The Origin Of The name Afghan) Their religion practically takes up most of their lives. “Islam is practiced by the majority of Afghanis and governs much of their personal, political, economic and legal lives.” (Afghanistan Guide) One of the most common images of the religion is when the women wear a veil to cover themselves up. This is just one of the many ‘laws’ that Muslim women have to face. The woman was in no better shape, she had gashes from the ax on her face but she survived. The event wasn’t a clean kill, it was done in a way to demonstrate their passion and hatred towards the couple.
