The short story “The Lottery” portrays the themes of death, tradition, and family. This short story was written by Shirley Jackson and was published in 1948. The short story is about a small village who gathers around for a tradition. They have lost the purpose of the tradition, but they keep on holding the lottery. All the families from the town participate; whoever receives the black dot in their paper, one of the family members will be stoned to death. In “The Lottery” the themes are represented within the characters and events in the village.

One of the villagers that the author decided to include in his writing instead of any other villager was Mrs. Delacroix: “Mrs. Hutchinson came hurriedly along the path to the square… Mrs. Delacroix, who stood next to her, and they both laughed softly” (Jackson 468) Mrs. Delacroix selected a stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands” (Jackson 474).By the author deciding to use Mrs. Delacroix it portrays her importance in the short story. Before the lottery began she was friendly with Mrs. Hutchinson, but then when she was the chosen one she acted as her enemy which is how all of the villagers act. She is portraying the villagers’ enjoyment of death that they have when participating in this event. Everyone selects their stones without thinking about it; when selecting which stone she wanted to use she decided to pick the biggest one. They are all poison with evilness on June 27th and they all forget their friendship with the person who will die when they grab a stone. The theme of death is portrayed as well in the black box: “Baxter held the black box securely on the stool until Mr. Summers had stirred the papers thoroughly with his hand (Jackson 467). The black box symbolizes a casket and the papers are the dictators of who will use the casket. By the author using black on the box it portrays death, fear, darkness, and many other words that have a negative connection and the main purpose the box is use is for the death of someone.
