“The Symbolic Lottery” In “The Lottery”, written by Shirley Jackson in 1948, tone and symbolism are equally important elements in comprehending this eerie short story. This dark tale takes place in a small town of about 300 people during the summer. The writer begins by painting a picture of children playing, women gossiping, and men making small-talk of home and finances, putting the reader at ease with a tone of normality. The people of the town coalesce before the lottery conductor, named Mr. Summers, appears to begin the annual town ritual of drawing from a box which will result in the killing of one townsperson by stone throwing. The author goes so far as to use the word “cheerfully” as a latecomer makes her way into the crowd— “Mr. Summers… said cheerfully, ‘Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.’” Mrs. Hutchinson, the late comer, responds jokingly, “Wouldn’t have me leave m’dishes in the sink, now would you, Joe?” Small exchanges like this one suggest a collective acceptance among the town. The atmosphere of the story is symbolic to the effect that societies seem to be desensitized to the atrocities in world around them, be it abroad or even among their neighbors. This lottery strikes little fear in its participants regardless of their knowledge of the inevitable outcome. It’s the way of the world, so to speak; Just another civic activity. “The lottery was conducted—as were the square dances, the teen club, and the Halloween Program—by Mr. Summers, who had time and energy to devote to civic activities.” Everyone seems to turn a blind eye to the brutality of the event, going about it as if were at all to be comparable to any other communal activity. There are regions in parts of the globe that take part in normal activities that, here in the United States, would be considered completely abnormal, even inhumane. Yet, traditional ties sewn into a cultural realm deems certain events, such as “the lottery”, to be well within the bounds of socially acceptable. Old Man Warner epitomizes the relevance of the power of tradition in this short story, and the symbol that takes shape from it. A veteran of seventy-seven years in the lottery, he snorts at the idea of giving it up. “Nothing but trouble in that… Pack of young fools,” he says when it is mentioned that some towns have given it up. “Listening to the young folks, nothing’s good enough for them. Next thing you know they’ll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work anymore…” he spouts off, illogically.
