Ducharme 1 of For my classic novel book trailer project, I selected the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The chose this book because it was recommended to me by a close friend. She read the book a few years ago and thought that it would be a good choice for me. When creating the book trailer, I utilized a variety of tools and mediums to reference the four different sections: setting, atmosphere, characters, and universal themes. First of all, to create a representation of the setting in Lord of the Flies, I decided to select and place pictures throughout the trailer to show the location of the plot, including the region, geography, climate, landscape, time period etc. Specifically, I chose the image of the older-style airplane at the start to signify that the story takes place in a older time period. I purposefully chose to stick within the lines ambiguity when mentioning the characters from the classic novel. I made the bold decision of sticking to the pronoun they when describing events that took place. I chose to do this because I didn’t want to limit myself or others, basically I didn’t want viewers of the trailer to make pre-determined judgements of the novel. For example, I didn’t want to say, “the boys” because I felt that at a subconscious level, this could turn some female readers, particularly young adults, away from wishing to read the novel because they don’t feel like it will be a very good ‘fit’ for them. Additionally, I wanted the trailer to be extremely cryptic in order to trigger the viewer’s curiosity, thus leading them to read the book. Also, the quotes that I chose had a vague style to them in order to only show basic plot points.
