Is there anything common between the three paintings? Which was the main stream that influenced the artists? Were there any differences in the three styles and can we say if one is better than the other? A small comparison to the following masterpieces will resolve our all questions.
Paul Cézanne was a post impressionist who used little of the nineteenth century’s methods. His painting of the Last Bathers was based on the Renaissance period, (Khan Academy,n.d) and on Titian’s work that inspired him to create that work. What the painting depicts, apart from the natural scenery, is the embodiment of human shape in such a way that all elements like trees, water rocks, women bodies become parts of an architectural composition, expressed in symmetrical and parallel rhythms. The use of the human body in paintings was basically a mean to convey ideas and emotions. In “Large Bathers’ we actually watch a scene composed of the background (the bank of a lake, trees and two shapes an animal and a human that moving away) and the foreground, figures of naked women enjoying the lake. We can say that “Joy of Life”, is similar to the “Large Bathers” in the way that both artists present the scenery. The both have implied a triangle in the middle of the painting, highlighting mostly the foreground through a scene that resembles a theatrical stage. The “Joy of Life” though, has vivid and bright colours, without contours. The nude women in the painting appeared to be relaxed and happy, which refers to that way that he fantasies paradise. (Khan
