The Laramie Project Play Analysis

Over the years, people have not socially recognized gay rights around the world. They are constantly looked down upon based on their sexual orientation. The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman is a play about the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. The play follows Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theater Project’s journey on their interviews in the town. The reactions in Laramie, Wyoming show that the people struggle with treating gays as equals in their community. This is shown through the personalities of the interviewees, their morality of how gays should be treated, and gay former residents’ opinions of the town. The first way that the play shows that the people in Laramie, Wyoming have a social issue with gays is through their personalities. When the members of the Tectonic Theater Project go to a church in Laramie, they find that there are a lot of people who do not support gay rights. CONRAD MILLER: If my kids asked me, I’d set them down and I’d say, “Well this is what gay people do. This is what animals do. Okay?” And I tell ‘em this is the life, this is the lifestyle, this is what they do. And I’d say, “This is why I believe it’s wrong.” (59). This play opened up people’s eyes on how many individuals around the country felt about homosexuals. It demonstrated the issues that cities in the United States had many issues with homosexuals in the area and shows the wrongs of not accepting them.
