What would the world do without time? A person’s life is developed around time, such as when someone eats, sleeps, or works. During the Age of Exploration, the explorers needed a time device that was advanced enough to be on a ship. If explorers did not have a way of measuring time, they would have no way of knowing when to go different directions and would have most likely become lost. The Age of Exploration lasted from the fourteenth century to the seventeenth century (Briney). Many geographical locations, inventions, and knowledge of the world developed during the Age of Exploration time period. One of the most important inventions during the Age of Exploration was the hourglass, because it helped expand geographical knowledge and was very versatile; it also made exploring possible and more advanced and was historically important for the world today (Kreis).
The Age of Exploration was the time period where new discoveries of the world came about and, “ The Age of Exploration served as a stepping stone for geographical knowledge” (Briney). The Europeans were the founders of the hourglass and were known for their glassmaking. The Portuguese, Italians, and Spanish were the most involved during the Age of Exploration and by the fifteenth and sixteenth century the British, Spanish, and Dutch became involved (Kreis). They were actively pursuing new trade routes and searching for resources around the world. To begin with, Gold was the most significant motivation of ‘the age of exploration’. ‘The age of exploration’ began in the early 15th century and it lasted until the 17th century. The purpose of numerous explorations at that time was to find gold. Since the trades between the West and the East had started, various kinds of merchandise drastically flowed to Europe. Among the eastern products, what Europeans were most interested in was gold. Royal families and nobles were eager to acquire gold to show off their wealth and power. Merchants in Venetia, or other cities also wanted golden products to make big profits in their transactions. Accordingly, they planned to explore the unknown world in purpose of possessing more gold. In addition, the travelers are obliged to search gold in expeditions by the kingdoms. Since Explorers often had a lack of funding needed for their journeys, they should rely on the kingdoms which can afford the expenses. The age of exploration, discovery and expansion between 1500th thru 1600th had people eager to traverse the world and find new adventures. The Spanish and British motivation for exploration into the New World were similar; both were seeking wealth, wanted to discover new trade routes, and identify locations for settlement (Troolin). Although, both countries had similar motives each had specific agendas that would later influence North, South and Central Americas future.

Thesis: Most people believe that The Age of Discovery was the product of a handful of adventurous explorers. They were an important part of this Age, but theirs was not the main motivation. I believe however, that the Bourgeoisie provided the impetus of this Age.
The Age of Exploration was one of the World History’s most important turning point. Before the Age of Exploration and right after the Crusades, trade between Asia and Europe had increased. However, there was a major setback and that was the prices of the goods that were traded. Starting from China, an object could be traded into India (for example) and then traded into Saudi Arabia for a higher price. And later on it would get traded into Europe for an even higher price. So the Europeans had to pay the bigger price for something that could have been worth less by going to the source itself. That lead to the Age of Exploration. They had no other choice but to look for alternative routes. The first of the journeys associated with the Age of Discovery were conducted by the Portuguese under Prince Henry the Navigator (“Begin Exploring the Age of Exploration with This Handy Overview”). By the 1400s, Portugal is strong enough to expand into North Africa, and they seize the coastal city of Ceuta in 1415. Their victory inspires Prince Henry, later known as Henry the Navigator, to organize voyages along the western coast of Africa (“Age of Exploration Timeline”). Newly formed Spain wanted to quickly catch up to the other European powers so they finance Christopher Columbus ' voyage to find a western trade route to Asia. Columbus lands in the Caribbean in 1492, convinced he has reached East Asia (BBC). His voyage opens the Americas to later European explorers (“Age of Exploration Timeline”). John Cabot sets out on a voyage from England. When he lands on the east coast of North America, he claims the land in the name of King Henry VII, mistakenly believing he is in Asia. European Exploration and Imperialism was a major development in the 1500s and continued shaping the world throughout the 1700s. In this time between 1500 and 1700 there were many changes to the world as it was known. Some of these changes included improved trade routes, broader views on all subjects, expansion, and even new inventions. The development of European exploration and Imperialism is a positive development due to the fact that though it did hurt some cultures it brought the world further in technology, secular thought, and connection between continents.

It was in the second half of the 18th century when James Cook, originally a poor farm boy, explored and mapped vast uncharted areas of the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. The Age of Exploration began as a result of new technologies that guided explorers during sea voyages. Explorers used many tools and technologies during The Age of Exploration, to explore and make discoveries. Technology and tools that explorers used, included, caravels, compasses, astrolabes, and even sponsors. A sponsor is a person who gives money for an undertaking, such as a voyage. A sponsor would also provide money for materials needed for the voyage, such as, caravels, and other necessities. A caravel is probably the most important material needed for a voyage. A caravel is a ship designed for long voyages. Caravels have both square sails, and triangular lateen sails. However, they each provided/allowed different things.
