Past experiences are like the bottom blocks of a pyramid because it is hard to start something big without a base. Along with personal experiences is the living situation at home, for example, our parents are a big influence in our lives. With these influences we tend to back them up believing that we are right. In perspective we have opinions on everything, so when we are reading we are also seeing how this is different or the same in our lives. Moreover, our personal experiences shape our reaction by writing something that may challenge the way we think, something that may interest a reader, or something the reader did not expect. For example, the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” seemed like a regular heartbreak story, but it was the complete opposite. The regular routine for Mrs. Maloney was wait for her husband and cook supper, but today was different he had to talk to her about something. After hearing the terrible news, we would think she walks away to mourn, but she leaves to go get a leg of lamb, ironically not to cook. “She lifted it out, and looked at it. It was wrapped in paper, so she took off the paper and looked at again--a leg of lamb” (Dahl 2). With no hesitation Mrs. Maloney kills her husband, “...and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head” (Dahl 2). Since, our normal reaction to these things would be to mourn this makes this story interesting since it is completely different from mourning. Most people would not do that in the past I have seen many people be very sad but never so mad to the point they kill a person shaping my reaction to be in complete
