My internship is the Student Help Desk located on Summit road eSTEM academy. What we have to do in the Student Help Desk is we take broken computers and fix them for the school. My mentor was Daryoush Mirshahi. He showed me how to replace keys on a keyboard by carefully prying off a key from an extra keyboard by taking a flat head screwdriver and unhinging the key from the left and right side. Then he would take the flat head screwdriver and peel off the rubber from under that specific key and carefully glue the rubber and place it where the missing rubber is from under the missing key. After he replaced the rubber he took the flat head screwdriver and unhinged a tiny mechanism that connected the key onto the board. After he unhinged the mechanism …show more content…
The Student Help Desk is run by students with help from other mentors. Without the Student Help Desk, the IT department will have an increase of easy problems and workflow that students themselves can fix. It is beneficial to the IT professionals receiving less work and students to learn more about their pathway and more knowledgeable to repairing computers. I am currently not informed on how much we spend in a budget for fixing laptops and other technology. I am currently aware that we have spare keyboards from seriously damaged laptops beyond repair and use those keyboards and other spare parts to repair any laptop that is fixable. So it is efficient in saving money by reusing old broken stuff to repair fairly new laptops instead of having to buy a new laptop every …show more content…
Our original theory was the laptop fan was slightly unplugged from the laptop thus causing the problem of the laptop fan not working. How we were both able to figure this out is we first took the bottom off the laptop off so we could see what was exactly happening to the fan as we turned on the laptop. When we turned on the laptop the laptop fan did not move and the screen gave us an error that there was no fan. What we did after that is the intern and I took out the battery because we were going to unscrew screws on the back of the laptop and we did not want the risk of something burning. After we unscrewed a couple of screws and unplugged it from the laptop we were able to take out the laptop fan. When we took the laptop fan out we blew on it clearing the dust out of the fan and spun it a few times. A few minutes later we put the laptop fan back in the laptop. When we turned on the laptop, the laptop was able to start perfectly without any other problems. I really like this experience because it was just the other intern and I who solved this problem without our mentor and was so satisfying managing to be able to solve a complex
An elderly woman came in on her scooter and said she needed help while she was losing consciousness. We had to take her to one of our room immediately and the second she was put in the room she was asked a bunch of questions she couldn’t answer at the time. As I nervously watched another emergency happened down the hall and my mentor had to run to that, emergency, she turned to me and said “You can handle this right? You went through all the training so you should be good!” before I could say anything she closed the door behind her. It was that moment I realized I wasn’t trained on what to do in emergencies.
The university-statehouse-industrial complex has grown such that the traditional models of primary and secondary education have survived two or three decades beyond their practical use. With a public school system that segregates and discriminates based on, “college material or not?” (Brolin & Loyd, 1989) and a university system that places only one in five graduates in work in their field of major (cite), our educational system has passed its prime and is still training and educating for 20th century job markets that no longer exist. The way that we educate and what we educate for and why needs rethinking from the top down and needs to be more practical and pragmatic. Career and technical education (CTE) consisting of specialized, targeted, and focused vocational programs at all levels do more than just prepare a student for a real job – these programs have practical education and socialization value that conventional classrooms centered around a teacher’s monologue for many do not. Nowhere is the added value of such targeted programs more useful and valuable than in special classes, courses, and CTE training aimed at students with disabilities.
“Mark, you won’t get anywhere without studying”, His mother use to tell him when he use to waist all his time playing rather that studying. Mark wasn’t such a good student because he wouldn’t spend any time studying, until one day his parents decided to send him to Cushing Academy, a boarding school in the USA, which they knew it was going to improve his study habits and help him being more responsible. But what really amazed his parents was this period of time used to study called “Study Hall”. Because of its amazing results, preparation for college, and providing responsibility, Study Hall remains as one of the vital qualities Cushing Academy possess and give students an opportunity to lead in higher education.
As societal pressures for higher education increase, more emphasis has been placed on the importance of a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. This has led to the increased enrollment of students with learning disabilities over the past decade. According to a recent survey from the National Clearinghouse on Postsecondary Education for Individuals with Disabilities, one in eleven full-time first-year students entering college in 1998 self-reported a disability. This translates to approximately 154,520 college students, or about 9% of the total number of first-year freshmen, who reported a wide range of disabilities, ranging from attention deficit disorder to writing disabilities (Horn).
I had the opportunity to look over the teacher’s grade book today, and noticed something disturbing to me: the homework section in the grade book were mostly blank spaces with marks down only a few names. For over the passed months, most of the students have not turned in their homework. There are a few that turn in their homework consistently and the rest have done nothing. I talked to my master teacher about this issue and she said that there was nothing she could do to encourage them to do their homework. She had confronted many students on their homework issue and received stories of family and personal problems that have prevent them from ever touching their homework. Such stories include not having anyone to help or the lack of time due to other family responsibilities.
The intervention central organization (n.d.) declares that, “Punishment generally does not improve student behaviors over the long term and can have significant and lasting negative effects on school performance and motivation”. Standard 1 of the Florida Leadership Standards defines student success when describes, “Student learning results are evidenced by the student performance and growth on statewide assessments; district-determined assessments that are implemented by the district”. In this case study, the school and district administrators used behavior, disposition to follow instructions, and peer relations as their indicator for success. As established in the Part II. Policies and Procedures for Students with Disabilities, Section
Overall “student performance was lower in the early 1900s than it is today, quite possibly because schools felt much less pressure than they do today to achieve equity and excellence among students” (Rossi, 1994, p.4). While many of the challenges schools encountered during the early 20th century are the same challenges in present day schools, they were not addressed back then because they were not a priority. The focus on equity and excellence that has been developed since the turn of the century is worthy of praise (Rossi, 1994, p.4).
When I was in middle school and through high school a mentor I had was an older man in my community. From this relationship I had someone who was concerned with what I was doing in school, and within the community. I also got the opportunity to learn different skills from him such as woodworking, landscaping, and the chance to further develop my communication skills. These experiences may seem like nothing, but from them I have learned that taking my time helps me produce my best work possible. At the same time I learned many life lessons from my experiences with him as well as his experiences that he shared with me. Still to this day I'm in contact with my mentor, and I'm very thankful for all of the experiences and life lessons that I learned
Usually, when I’m not doing school work or hanging out with friends, I find myself curiously watching videos discussing technology. While watching a video on the disassembly of a computer, I was inspired to try it myself. Not looking to destroy my mom’s work laptop, I figured I would try to take apart something simple. I remembered I had an old, broken calculator sitting in my room collecting dust. There was no risk in tinkering with it, so I grabbed it, ran to the garage and went straight to work. This seemingly insignificant experiment eventually led to greater aspirations.
Tutoring is a crucial aspect of the learning process. Unlike a general classroom setting, a tutor provides personalized experience that is adjusted to a student’s need. Tutors can help in several ways; by making difficult concepts easy and interesting to understand; and by providing insightful analysis for a student looking for enlightenment and new perspective in a particular subject area.
Computer support specialist help people with trouble they are having such as software, hardware, and equipment trouble. There are many ways that they can assist people with their troubles they are having. Some computer support specialist offer services such as help desk service, in home service, and in store help. The computer support specialists are always needed. I am going to tell you about the computer support specialist career field.
The continuous prerequisite to provide more services every day as an enterprise, corporate, or educational organizations continually expands reflects the need to balance the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) with a balance of in and out-service resources available for the community. The blend of cost efficiency and actionable objectives of a help-desk function should be categorized and defined by the mission and support garnered by the technology the organization includes and should disabuse the end user from seeking the “common” answer. First, a helpdesk should be defined in the sense of a direction that communicates what users should be looking for, such as a particular malfunction or corruption to a user PC rather than the traditional error or search of a particular function. In this mission the following objectives from (Bulchand-Gidumal, 2009) summarize the help desk:
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
The concept of Student Information Management System (SIMS) is one that continues to elicit mixed reactions. Its application appears limited by a number of factors. Whitley, Gal, and Kjaergaard (2014) connotes that SIMS faces challenges in acceptability due to the kind of information being stored, personal identification information being stored in the system and the identity of people accessing this information. Ngoma (2009) explores the level of success student information system, a subset of SIMS. Findings from Ngoma’s expedition indicate that many institutions tend to have a negative attitude towards implementation of such projects. Their evaluation mechanism on application of this technology is tied to the level of improvement of the institution especially student performance (Sun & Benton 2008; Chong 2014).
Ultimately it is up to the professor if laptops should be banned in the classroom, but all the evidence supports that it does inhibit the learning of students. Anyone can agree that when they go on the internet or computer to do a specific task they usually end up in places that have no significance to what they were doing in the first place. Everyone is guilty of this, but when you have a college lecture full of laptops it can be frustrating to see that the
