Many people drop out of public grade schools funded by the government. So why should we fund additional college education to everyone when there are plenty of people who drop out of school and people who chose not to attend college? A lot of people wish to attend college but not all of them stay consistently driven to learn. America has the money to constantly pour in so many different programs for various issues, but not for higher education where we all can attend. How can the next generation be able to tackle the issues that will occur in the U.S. or the world if most of the population is not educated enough to come up with solutions for our problems. There are always two sides to an argument and when it comes to free college one side says tuition should be free, while the other side says tuition should not be free.

Also, giving away college education would almost certainly do the opposite of what people want it to do, which is give more money to students from richer families than from poorer ones. Ultimately, the United States should bring forth a free, government subsidized, higher education, because of its benefit to the economy, creation of equal opportunity, and the resolution of the student loan crisis. Even though it will require funding, there are certainly innocuous alternatives that could provide this rather than putting the extra stress on average American taxpayers.
Community college students aren’t benefitting from this formula because the split is drastic. Even though the formula was established to dispense a minimum annual fund it did not create a fair distribution of money. As Ould said, “the way government funds schools is a mess” (13). Not enough money is going into classrooms in order to measure up to the demand of classes. Tuition fees have also increased so that colleges could get themselves more money. Community colleges have suffered most when there is a decrease in per student funding, “ there is no question it negatively impacts the quality of a community college educational experience as seen in longer lines, larger class sizes, fewer course offerings, and less services provided” (6). As colleges’ funds dry up, colleges must turn to the public to further support higher education. By raising state taxes, colleges can collect funds to help improve the school’s budgets. The state provides funds from the taxes for colleges to receive a certain amount for each student currently enrolled. All community and traditional four year colleges collect these funds in order to maintain the school’s budget. As reporter, Eric Kelderman states, “less than a third of colleges’ budget is based from state taxes”. The school’s budget is how colleges are able to provide academic support programs, an affordable intuition, and hire more counselors. Colleges must now depend on state taxes more than ever for public colleges. Without collecting more funds from state taxes, as author, Scott Carlson explains how Mr. Poshard explains to senators “our public universities are moving quickly toward becoming private universities…affordable only to those who have the economic wherewithal to them” (qtd. in.) Public colleges must be affordable to anyone who wishes to attend. If colleges lack to provide this to students, it can affect dropouts, a student’s ability focus, and cause stress. The problem of lack of funding is that colleges have insufficient funds. Therefore, the best possible solution for the problem of lack of funding would be increasing and collecting more funds from state taxes.
As many know college is not low in price. As knowing this some people would suffer from a required college without major financial assistance. In addition to my first remark if I pose a question to you, how many americans already go to college? According to the well reputable New York Times 65.9% already attend college. Statistically all others don't attend due to a problem in finance. Another idea to throw around is how many americans can afford college as it is right now, according to a CNN Money report even families making over $100,000 a year can't afford nearly 60% of U.S. colleges without massive debt. In addition to a well respected harvard study on college dropouts 56% of students dropped out due to financial issue.
The issue of gaining a college education is one that everyone should be emotional about. It can definitely change the way someone acts and thinks in day to day activities. Having a college education is something that one could fall back on in times of trouble. It can be a life-saver; it can be a money-maker, but most important it can be something that can withstand any hardships that life may throw at someone. While opponents of a college education being important may argue that student loan debt is crippling, they ultimately fail to consider that over a lifetime college graduates make twice as much as just high school graduates (College Education). By realizing that having a college education is worth it, society as a whole would become smarter and the standard way of living would drastically improve because of the making of more money.
