Introduction
With the growth of technology and an increased interconnectivity between nations, it is natural that there is now a growing supply of global media available. However, it is not merely new sources of entertainment that this opportunity makes available but also a possible resource for second language acquisition. This would be particularly useful for children or young adults attempting to learn another language, because, while not conclusive, many studies have found that early adoption of second language learning results is more likely to result in near fluent usage. As such, using popular culture is able to motivate adolescents to pursue a second language, as it is essential to include an element of fun to the learning. Similarly as many examples of media are authentic material and are able to be used as an example of more realistic conversations, it will allow for better second language acquisition than many textbooks which include an overly scripted dialogue. With the available resources, it is now even easier to both attract and maintain the attention of students while still enabling them to develop a better grasp on a new language.
Language Acquisition for Young Adults
Muriel Saville-Troike (2006) believes that there is “complete agreement […] that since second language acquisition follows native language acquisition, a major component of the initial state for second language learning must be prior knowledge of a first language” (p. 18). The prior knowledge of their mother tongue is arguably the greatest influence on the acquisition of a foreign language as it involves the conversion of a prior understanding of one language into the other in either positive or negative ways. Therefore, further research should be performed in order to best determine what factors can affect edutainment learning and the best way to refine it for increased success in second language acquisition.
Conclusion
Technical advancements in digital multimedia delivery hold huge potential for second language learners. There is generally strong technical and user support for the fundamental notion of building language enhancements around mainstream entertainment (Bird 2004). While further research is needed in order to determine the best way to utilise the resource, there is still much potential in the use of popular culture material to support foreign language acquisition.
