Kline is a student at college. After grueling classes, study meetings and doing assignments in library for several hours every day, she feels elated when she enters her dorm room. Apart from the obvious reason that she gets to take some well-deserved rest, another reason contributing to her happiness is her pet dog, who is sharing her room. According to Kline, her dog makes her happy and much relaxed when she is stressed (Crowe). It has not been a recent concept to keep pets with you while you are in college but it is certainly gaining a lot of popularity. Students bring a part of their home to their hostel rooms. They need to be fed, walked, played with and taken to a vet in case of illness. Having a pet is a permanent decision. You cannot dump him when you get tired of him .student do not think ten to fifteen years in advance, when their pet will need more care than ever. Also, they yearly cost of keeping a pet is around 7000 dollars. This can get very expensive for the student. Even if all of this is ignored or dealt with, the fact remains that pets have a will of their own. When the pet owners are out enjoying their day to day life, the pet is cooped up in a room the size of a closet. This is cruel and very frustrating for the pet. They can get lonely. This will create a negative impact on the health of the pet. They can go into depression. There have been issues of pet misbehavior in colleges. Animals have habits of their own. For examples dog tend to bark a lot when they are excited or stressed. Rabbits like to dig and roam around. Similarly, parrots create a lot of noise. Some students even keep snakes as pets in their rooms. This is a possibly dangerous situation. Deb Duren at Stephens College, Columbia is the vice president of student services. The fact remains the same, that animals will be animals. No matter how strong the program is, it is draining the resources of the college. The money which should have been better spent at giving scholarship to some poor but well deserving and intelligent student is instead being spent on pets. The fact that a student is keeping pet is not all bad and worthless. There are certain pros of this situation. Mike Robilotto of Eckerd College in St. Petersberg is of the opinion that students liking having pet and the many more students are now trying to get pets for themselves. Thus the number of students with pet has been rising steadily for the past decade. Those students who do not have pets, like the presence of pets in other students rooms” (Peters) . this gives students a different flavor from their everyday normal routine. After their tiring day at college they get to spend some time playing with someone else’s pet and it relaxes
