The Importance Of Lowering The Voting Age

The lack of participation of younger generations show that lowering the voting age could have more of a negative outcome, as opposed to a positive one. Pursuing the idea would then begin to distract us from the real problem, getting a higher ammount of people to vote. Sure if we lower the age it allows people to vote at a younger age, but then are they going to have the incentive to do so? We are not solving a problem by just allowing younger people to vote, we need to pursuade them to be more involved in our government, and in our elections.

From 1948 to 2012, we had a small increase in participation. In 1948 it was 51% of eligible voters that voted, in 2012 however it increased to 62%. We need to continue this increasing ammount as stated in Keep the Voting Age at 18 " increasing this percentage should be our goal.", but if we lower the voting age more eligible people may chose not to vote thus lowering our percent. Instead of allowing the youth to vote at a younger age, we should be reaching out to them at a younger age to get them more involved in our campaigning. According to a study roughly 38% of the youth, between 18-24 that are eligible vote, so why allow more to take and reduce that number by a drastic ammount? As stated in Lower the Voting Age "voter participation in congressional elections hovers at 38%." People we need to band together so we can reach out to the youth, then teach them the importance of a strong government. Then there will be no need for a lower age because the day young men and women are able to vote they will be more prone to do
