Othello is a brilliant work brought forth to us by the one and only William Shakespeare. This work has been highly regarded for centuries; however how has it remained so popular and relevant after such a long amount of time? That is because Shakespeare incorporates many timeless issues such as racism, love, betrayal and jealousy. The real question though is which one of these issues played the biggest role in keeping this play relevant throughout the course of time? The idea of love gives Shakespeare the ability to incorporate many other relatable ideas into the play. One that he uses efficiently paired with love is the idea of jealousy. Shakespeare understood that love is an extremely powerful emotion that can large effect on people and often times when someone loves someone whom does not love them jealousy is brought into play. Shakespeare incorporates this exact tactic into the play by making Roderigo jealous of Othello because he has Desdemona. Shakespeare would not have been able to incorporate this idea if he had not thought about the importance of love. Love continues to play a massive role throughout the play. As a result of Roderigo’s love for Desdemona, Iago is able to manipulate Roderigo into thinking that Iago can help him. Iago also manipulates other people with the idea of false love. That is why this play is still so relevant today, because any reader in the world can have their heart opened up to a tragic love story. It simply has been and remains to be one of the most prevalent yet successful storylines in the history of writing. The love seen between Othello and Desdemona is a rare one. At the beginning of their marriage they are as happy as ever and you can tell that they both respect and love each other deeply. They love each other so deeply in fact that you can honestly tell from the literature that they would never do anything to hurt the other. This deep and endless love, however, is exactly what comes between them. Othello was so easily manipulated by Iago because of the sincerity of his love for Desdemona. He was so afraid to lose her to someone else that he was willing to take her out of the picture completely. One amazing aspect of this play that serves as an inspiration to people of all generations, is the fact that Othello and Desdemona still loved each other with everything that they had even when their relationship was at the lowest of lows.
