Growing up in Honoka’a, a compact and close-knit community taught me to always be an epitome person; courteous, controlled, and most of all to be grateful for what I have. My parents, Danette and Elston, always told me, “you never know who is watching.” I yearn to give back to the community and my family, specifically for my grandmother, Lydia, my parents and myself. However, giving back to the community and my family won’t just help them, hopefully I leave behind a legacy that will help others. First of all, the Honoka’a community is an extremely adjacent town, with the resulting phrases of “I know your parents or grandparents” or “Whose your parents?..... When a community truly believes and is 100% behind a team it can really influence outcomes. I cherished the moments when the gym over flowed with supporters screaming their lungs out, making me want to play harder to show that their support was well worth it. This is the entire reason why giving back to the community is such an essential task for me. Honoka’a is sheltered, so I haven't had to experience any hardships. It has taken care of me for so long that it's my turn to repay the debt and take care it, as it has done for me. In order to take care of my community I ought to be more active, meaning that it is my duty to do more community services that benefit not only the present but the future and its generations.
