Daylighting is the practice of placing windows or other openings and reflective surfaces so that during the day natural light provides effective internal lighting. During ‘rediscovered’ by 20th century architects, daylighting is a technical term as a common centuries-old, geography and culture independent design basic. People use glass walls and wrap-around windows in corners of building to achieve higher levels of light in workplace when England’s industrial revolution. At that time, people measuring illuminance on a grid or undertaking a daylight factor calculation to analyze the amount of daylight received in an internal area. But now we can use software to calculate complex calculations to review the benefit of a specific design quickly. Nowadays daylighting system is a complicated part in building. A daylighting system in the building is not only of daylight apertures, like skylights and windows, but is coupled with a daylight-responsive lighting control system. Using daylighting is not only reducing building energy cost, but also creating a …show more content…

It also puts a lot skylights. 2. Light Shelf An overhang, usually horizontal, with a highly reflective upper surface that reflects daylight onto ceiling and deep into a space. Light shelf always be placed at above eye-level in a window and the ceiling usually need to be high to make sure it will be effective. It is usually applied on the building’s equator-facing side, which is the most effective place to find the maximum sunlight. Light shelf not just allow light to pass through the building, but also because of the draping design of light shelfs, it is designed for shading near windows and help to reduce glare of windows. An external light shelf is usually more effective than an internal. The combination of external and internal light shelf will deliver the best performance in providing uniform illumination gradients.
