Creativity transcends disciplines. It builds momentum, pioneers innovation, and breaks boundaries. As a state of mind, imagination is ultimately the driving force of creativity. The imagination is a perpetual engine of change; translating novel ideas into practice. The scope of this research aims to explore creativity within the context of an organization, specifically that of the animation industry, and study the intricacies of creative practices within three globally admired animation studios.

At Walt Disney Animation Studios, creativity and innovation are the cornerstones of their success. The physical environment of DreamWorks is built around small, intimate groups of four to six employees to encourage ingenuity and “the best visual output from each person” (Grose, 2013). The success of Pixar is duly noted worldwide and they remain a leader in the animation industry. The company reeled in more than 100 awards and nominations for their work on animated films, commercials, and technical contributions to the animation industry. The trials and triumphs of this company have earned it its spot as one of the leading animation companies in the entertainment industry today. With all this success it is hard to think it was almost over before it ever began. Pixar’s history of trials and triumphs starts with a group of men and their ideas that would revolutionize the entertainment industry.
As the technology and business environment are constantly changing, organizations cannot avoid constant change and they have to learn how to cope with and take the advantage of creativity. The abilities of leading people, strategic planning, managing change, resourcefulness, doing whatever it takes, inspiring commitment, being a quick learner, decisiveness, building and mending relationships and composer are repeatedly shown throughout the development and growth of Walt Disney Co. For instance, Walt Disney said, “I execute my vision to make those dreams come true,” He would place all of his focus, time, energy, resources and talent to making sure his dream became a true reality (Pahl, 2015). This speaks to his “do whatever it takes” and “resourcefulness” leadership skills. Furthermore, when he had a vision for an animated film, Walt would pull all the staff together at his studio to act out the scenes for the movie, bringing the film to life from its pages. That action would light a path of creativity and open up the minds of his team to new possibilities, allowing them to be free and innovative. In reviewing the vast corporation of the Walt Disney Company and all that it has to offer, one profound statement made by Walt Disney himself comes to the forefront, “I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse” (Walt, n.d.). This statement suggests that the company has a strong focus to continually guide them in the way of the original idea of the company. Even as it watches the changes taking place in society and adapts to the new technologies and innovations, the Walt Disney Company has been able to implement diverse strategies for its growth and prosperity.

The history of animation in making films is long and colourful, but not glorious. As a medium of story-telling, it has yet to rise to its potential. Animation needs more popularity, for the creators and their fruit of labour. As a medium, animation offers a lot of creative independence to the maker of the film, which sometimes is seen as a crutch, instead of a boon. The element of acting is subdued in most animated films, which for some, takes away some of its glory. As Mok and Morris (2010) asserts, creativity is the ability to use mental potential to generate new and original ideas, while innovation involves implementation of the new idea. Moreover, while ideas (the main result of creativity) are intangible and thus not measurable, innovation introduces a measurable change in the existing system or develops a physical product, which makes the ideas viable. Furthermore, unlike creativity, where the level or nature and number of conceived ideas depend on imagination, knowledge and curiosity, innovations are usually incremental with every innovation being an improvement of the existing solutions.
