The Nuclear Arms Race broke out in 1945 when World War two ended. It was between the United States and the Soviet Union. It came to an end in 1991 when the Soviet Union broke apart (Swift, 2009, Element of the cold war, para 1). The Nuclear Arms Race was a key factor in the Cold War. It was the first time people thought the world might end (Swift, 2009, Element of the cold war, para 1). The Nuclear Arms Race impacted the Cold War a lot. It impacted the Cold War by getting new technology, it led to the space race, and caused higher security measures.

The Space Race was the battle between the United States and the Soviet Union to have the first man on the moon (Harrison, 2011). The Nuclear arms race was all about having the most missiles in order to gain the most superiority (power). Consequently, the United States and the Soviet Union believed that the Space Race would give them higher superiority as well. Instead of trying to build bigger and better missiles, both countries were trying to build bigger and better rockets (Harrison, 2011). The U.S. wanted to be the first to explore the moon because they wanted to have superiority (Harrison, 2011).
