The Subcluture Of Punk Rock has influenced my out look on the world by broadening my mind through the music and people that surrounded me. This expansion of knowledge through compassion, respect and challenging others ideas has shaped my own identity as a punk -vegetarian.
Punk Rock has shaped me through music and through my personal experiences with the punks. Attending Punk shows and seeing first hand the aggressive, loud and political stand points felt like home. Viewing a hoard of people mindlessly throwing their body and limbs around. This in not chaos. This is my home away from home. Concerts are the time for punks to enjoy their favorite bands, expressing their political or social views, have fun and relate to others. The people I have met at these shows are kind, respectful individual’s, regardless of their heavy hardware and unduplicated edgy looks. I’ve been to various shows before but a fond memory of feeling at Home was in 2011. My boyfriend at the time had took me to a show in Flagstaff, Az of his friends band called Unstable Youth. This is where I had my first real experience with punks and working the merch booth. Litening to the bands like The Ramones, The Casulaties, NOFX, Misfits, Rancid, and Social Distortion, then being able to first had meet a underground punk band and see the subculture was surreal at the moment. Random people that I have never met gave me respect and trust. The trust with merchandise and exchange of money. This trust was given because I was part of this subculture. A rock genre that spoke often of anti-establishment, anarchism, and rebellion to the norm and society. Genre that was started in a garage and becoming a major cultural phenomenon.
In closing, the undoubtable influence of music, more specifically of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society is responsible for a number of changes to the status quo. These range from sexual liberation and racial desegregation all culminating with other influences to create an intergenerational identity. Despite the desperate attempts of older generations to smother these influences, these changes ultimately shaped the years that followed, molding the country into what it is today. Along the way these changes as well as individual involvement in them has also eased the lives of many through empowerment and a feeling of community and purpose. Culture is the unique way to act and think within a people from a certain place. It’s the way the people hold their beliefs, what they hold valuable, how they speak and even how they write. Culture is how people relate and act with one another within a certain space. Culture can vary from place to place such as city, state, country or continent.
The American rock band Nirvana impacted American culture and society by paving the way for the punk rock subculture into mainstream corporate America. Punk rock music stems from the rock genre but has its own agenda. The crux of punk rock is that it is a movement of the counterculture against the norms of society. Punk rock in itself is made up of a subculture of people who rejected the tameness of rock and roll music during the 1970s. (Masar, 2006, p. 8). The music stresses anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian ideas in its lyrics as well as scorns political idealism in American society. Everyone has a favorite type of music. Many people follow music closely and have unique tastes. Some people find genres and mixes of genres that they like. People find other people who share these musical interests. People who immerse themselves in a genre or performer find the live performance particularly meaningful and seek out those artists in concert. Music concerts are some of the biggest and most attended events in our modern culture. These are venues where people come together and express themselves through movement and sound. Individuals transcend their everyday experience, connecting to the performers and each other. The experience of the performance and the energy around you is addictive. It’s almost religious. The desire to return to that “mountain top” is powerful. And for how powerful it is to the crowd, it is so much more invigorating for the performers up on stage doing what they love. What if the high just isn’t there the next time? What if a tolerance starts to build up? That’s when many begin to add narcotics into the experience, to rebirth that feeling. Music has been a vital part of culture, and drugs have always been involved in and around both music and culture, effecting the music and the youth listening to it.
In every generation there are countercultures, some more prominent and influential than others that go against social norms. Jack Kerouac brought to light the counterculture known as The Beat Generation from under the veil of the conservative surface in the 1950’s, in his book On the Road. This generation was so influential that they were the driving force behind the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 60’s and 70’s. Having strong ideas and values about freedom and personal fulfillment, that they perused relentlessly, they created big changes and even inspired generations after them who feel dissatisfied with the pressures to conform to instead push against the norms of society.

Culture has a variety of elements that is important in understand. To grasp culture, we must consider both thoughts and things. Culture shapes not only what we do, but also what we think and how we feel.
When we think about culture everyone has their own definition of what it means and what it should be like, depending on their background and where they came from. This will be a short description of what I think culture means, along with other information’s such as, which cultures I belong to and how they have influenced me. one person can belong to a lot of different cultures based on he/she’s race, ethnicity, music taste…etc., I have selected two of the major cultures that I belong to and tried to describe how they have influenced me along with other information’s about those cultures.
1. What is Culture? What I personally think is that our culture is the foundation of who we really are in life. It identifies the lifestyle and pursuits that are practiced in the group of people we relate with in our society. In other words, an important concept to understand is that cultural beliefs, values, and practices are learned from birth first at home, in church, and other places where people meet. Some practices and beliefs in human culture include religion, music, sports, food, health beliefs, and art which represent the values we have in life. Also, our own culture is diverse and it is significant to look with in and identify what we value the most, what is essentially needed, and how we see the world. It is our remaining tool and we don’t even realize it is needed to communicate and socialize with others.
