Dante Alighieri once said, “The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.” The same person who said this quote wrote the epic poem called the Divine Comedy. The Divine Comedy is separated into three parts, Inferno being the first. The Inferno is an allegory telling of the journey of Dante going through Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. This story is centered around seven deadly sins, telling the story of how man’s true nature can send him to depths he never imagined were possible. Dante’s writing has influenced many people’s thoughts about how they live their life and how the decisions they make are going to affect them in the afterlife. Even though, Dante wrote these stories over 700 years ago, the fact that it can still be taught in schools today, shows the importance this piece of literature has had on the world. …show more content…

In Canto III, Dante reads these lines which he finds inscribed on the Gate of Hell, as he and Virgil pass into the Ante-Inferno before the river Acheron, “through me you enter into the city of woes, through me you enter into eternal pain, through me you enter the population of loss, abandon all hope, you who enter here.” (Canto III,7) These lines are to be said to represent the voice of Hell and show the nature as to what Hell is and pave the way for what Dante’s epic poem was going to be about. These same lines have been used in many modern day sources of media. It is used in movies like Ice Age, games like World of Warcraft, and one may have heard it being said at your favorite Disneyland ride.
