The purple bruises, dried tears, broken bones and the broken life are what make abuse cases so raw and exposed. Children who are abused are stripped of their childhood. They will never get to experience the bruises from falling off of a swing; instead they get to experience the cold touch of abuse. The cold touch of abuse leaves a mark on a child for the rest of their lives. The main questions most people have is: Are the most dangerous people harmful because of abuse, what are the effects of abuse, from where did this start rising, and what can American’s do to make this stop? “ To begin with, abuse is something that is not taken lightly. Abuse certainly has made its own list of effects. In the website, MentalHelp, they state “They may develop substance abuse disorders. If abuse has been very severe, the victim may ne traumatized, and may develop a posttraumatic stress injury such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or acute stress disorder (Comprehensive Mental Health and Mental Illness Information on Topics like Depression, Bipolar, Suicide, Anxiety, Addiction, Schizophrenia, and More).” With these effects being stated, this proves that abuse does not only effect someone physically, but also mentally. Abuse leaves a never-ending list of issues on someone. The effects that come with abuse go on and on. In the website, it also states “If abuse has occurred from a very early age and has been substantial, a personality disorder may occur (such as borderline, narcissistic, or histrionic personality disorders or in some cases, a severe dissociative disorder such as a dissociative identity disorder (commonly known as multiple personality disorder) (Marcia 1)”. The effects of abuse do leave a mark on someone. It can change them to a person they never thought they would be. Whether it may be a big bruise on the hip, or a poor mental state, abuse does leave a permanent scar. It might not last forever, but the memories of abuse last for a life time. Abuse has been around for years and it has reached its’ peak. No one really thinks it will happen to them until it does. In the website, Psychology Today, it shows “…1,580 children died in 2014 as a result of child abuse and neglect. It is even possible that some of these tragic occurrences are heightened in winter months as orthopedist discover more child abuser related fractures in their offices (Health, Help, Happiness + Find a Therapist).” The information clearly stated that the peak is during the winter months. The death numbers rose in 2014 during those winter months and it has not gone down. Abuse occurs more often in winter months because parents feel the need to relieve their stress somehow. In ABCNews, it states, “During the recent severe cold weather we would expect that violence is also more likely to occur as families are confined in the home for extended periods and that, as with holidays, the opportunity for escape is quite low (ABCNews)”. The article from ABCNews proves that abuse happens more in the winter months because they cannot escape. Winter months make it easier to abuse a child because everyone is supposed to gather. Abuse numbers and hotline numbers climb during the winter months. Suicide rates also go up during the winter months. People begin to feel alone because they feel as if there is no way of escaping.
