King Louis XIV, the longest ruling King of France was the most powerful, dominant, and insatiable King of France. He is known for the building of Versailles and looked upon as a God proportional to Apollo, the God of the sun. He devoted his life to pleasing his many mistresses, and wives. In addition, he was dedicated to taking control of many countries, expanding his palace and the city of Versailles with luxury and greatness. King Louis XIV sought magnificent in everything including love, battle, and art. He wanted his palace to outshine any palace every built. When seventeen year old Louis XIV first stumbled across Versailles, it was only a vacant, mosquito infected swap land. According to author, tony Spawforth He most likely picked this place almost to prove his will was greater than nature. As a fact Louis reason for picking Versailles was sentimental it was his father’s old hunting lodge and as a boy he played and hunted there. Many people died on site trying to build Louis’s palace. There was no health and safety therefore, it cost a lot of accidents. There was an incident were a woman’s son died on site blasphemed the king when he visited the site, she was punished for her dishonesty toward the king. There also was another incident of such involving an old man; he was severely punished for this. King Louis XIV had two wives during the reigning of France. Maria Theresa of Spain who bared him six children. He was never in love with her, but respected her. She did not have the looks, education, charm, or spirit to capture a man like the King. She accepted his infidelity as he had many mistresses. The last years of Louis XIV were depressing, he was very unhappy. He suffered from the major tragedies in his life, both personally and by the country he ruled. He was also not able to get his finances back under control. Additionally, some unsavory alliances caused him to alienate the public and lose the respect that many loyal Frenchmen and women gave him. Overall Louis succeeded in impressing everybody, he left great impact on the city of Versailles and France itself. The longest ruling king 72 reigning years of magnificent power.
