The reason for the parties is that one day he is hoping that Daisy Buchanan, his former lover will walk through the door. In a lot of novels, authors use literary elements to portray information about the characters. Sometimes the author will use these elements to show images to help the reader see what a character feeling or doing. Readers will use these elements to better understand a book. In The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald uses the setting to help show the differences in social classes between the East Egg, West Egg, and the Valley of Ashes. It is a ginormous industrial area that represents working hard to try and achieve American dream, but it also shows how anyone can be trapped in poverty with no way out (Morton-Mollo). At the entrance of the valley there is a sign with the big eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg, the eyes signifies the guilt of the people and how the American society is judged by God. The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic - their retinas are one yard high. They look out of no face but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose(Fitzgerald 27). The eyes are constantly looking down upon the city in guilt. It shows how the modern world is portrayed through the eyes of someone with greater power. Two characters in the valley are George and Myrtle Wilson. Both are very poor and work very hard to make a living. The poor and the rich become interconnected after Tom has an affair with Myrtle Wilson in the Valley of Ashes later leading to the murder of Myrtle and Gatsby. Tom used the city as a way to get Myrtle to talk to him. Both, her and Tom have lived in a mansion right after she left Gatsby. The East egg represents older individuals and inherited wealth from family(Morton-Mollo). Those from the east are know to go to Gatsby’s parties. Tom and Daisy live in a nice mansion living in an elegant and leisure life. Tom has never had to work hard for anything. He doesn't value people who work hard for their fortune, he despises people like Gatsby(Morton-Mollo). He is very rich and Daisy has the ability to acquire anything she wants from Tom. She freely lives in the mansion to do whatever she pleases to do and with whoever she wants within certain boundaries. The mansion gives her a sense of comfort that she doesn't want to leave for Gatsby. She already has a lot that she doesn't want to lose that she has gotten from Tom. Fitzgerald's use of setting in The Great Gatsby helps the reader see the contrasts in social classes in American Society. The 1920s were a time of a lot of social change.
