Gatsby Comparative Essay In the novel, the Great Gatsby and the short story, America and I, the American Dream is portrayed as constructive. In the Great Gatsby, the American Dream is symbolized as being a successful businessman and having lots of money. On a similar note, the story America and I shows the American Dream as a chance to come to the land of the free and the brave to work for your money while also have rights as a citizen. Both of these literature pieces offer the same view of the American Dream while following two different stories as they discover America. As Nick and Gatsby are driving into the city the scene is painted like this, “Over the great bridge, with the sunlight through the girders making a constant flicker upon the moving cars, with the city rising up across the river in white heaps and sugar lumps all built with a wish out of non-olfactory money. The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world”. This quote explains how the rest of the world views America. It is the classic view of the American Dream and shows that anything can happen from this point forward. We see people of different races and nationalities racing towards New York City and pursuing economic possibilities, racial and religious diversity, and a carefree attitude. Anzia also has the same view on the American Dream that is displayed in the Great Gatsby. She says, “Arch! America! From the other end of the earth from where I came, America was a land of living hope, woven of dreams, aflame with longing and desire”(1). Anzia viewed the American Dream as every other immigrant coming to the United States. She wanted to experience the freedom and what it was like to be able to live her life the way she wanted to.
