Many people are good at heart because they are alway positive and the good in every negative thing. In the play “The Diary of Anne Frank,” the theme people are good at heart is developed through the characters Anne Frank, Mr.Frank, and Peter Van Daan. To start off, Anne Frank is a big part to the theme. In Act I, Scene 4, Anne thinks of her behavior every night, and how she can be a better person. Because of this, Anne brings herself down but always thinks of how she can get better. Also, in Act 1, Scene 5, she gives everybody thoughtful gifts. This shows she is good at heart because she made them herself because she wanted to bring cheer. Furthermore, Mr.Frank is also a big contributor. In Act 1, Scene 2, he takes in the Van Daans even at the worst times. This shows that he could have denied them but let them come because he was generous. In Act 1, Scene 3 he offers his bed even though it was his own personal room. This shows that he is always willing to help. Character vs. self is important in the beginning of the Diary of Anne Frank because it shows what the characters are dealing with. In the story Anne has a difficult time deciding to sear her star or not. “It’s funny, I can’t throw mine away. I don’t know why.”(Goodrich & Hackett pg.709). Therefore,this quote shows character vs. self in that it gives a glance into Anne’s thoughts and what she is undergoing in her life. For instance, she fought with Henry many times for the sake of Elizabeth, and the most important is that she chose death so that her daughter would have a better life. Anne was a very respectable character for the most part. She was unselfish in the end, choosing to die for the sake of her daughter. She tried to stand up for herself as a woman in a male-dominated society. Though she did not succeed in the end, she made a strong point that she would not be controlled by anyone but herself.
... the middle of the tattered city sits Mr. Frank, reading Anne’s diary. He is the only one who survived after being sent to a concentration camp. Wind was blowing in the pages he was barely holding. Determination settled in his face as a thought of publishing the diary to let everyone know the life of being drowned in silence, the life of perpetual fear. Anne Frank may be gone, but her legacy is left behind. Although everyone else died in different concentration camps they were sent to, Mr. Frank organized the hiding to the best of his ability. Mr. Frank demonstrated his great leadership qualities by thinking of others before himself, keeping a constructive and encouraging attitude, and making hard decisions. The play would not have been possible without Mr. Frank’s effort in getting Anne’s diary published. Through thick and thin, Mr. Frank sewed everything together.
Another important issue that the author brings up is the fact that the Franks were better informed than other Jews about the extirmination camps. The other Jews had no knowledge about these camps, making it a little bit more reasonable for the others to want to stick together as a family. The Franks, however, knew this and they still did nothing to prepare for the Nazis. The author also had some ideas for the Franks to prepare for the invasion when the Nazis came, even though they stayed together. He suggested that Mr. Frank could have had some form of protection, such as a gun; Mr. Frank could have tried to detain the police when they came, while his family could try to run to safety. Sure, Mr. Frank would have been killed of beaten, but he could have done a better job of protecting his family.
Anne Frank stated in her diary that "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart." As a Jewish teenager during the time of the Holocaust, Anne had been hiding in an attic with her parents and sister, as well as the Van Daans, their son, and Mr Dussel. This time was extremely rough for her entire race. This quote shows how optimistic she really was. She had the attitude to think that even underneath all of the hatred that not only the Nazis beheld, but perhaps also the people that she was hiding with for years, there was at least a small amount of good in them. Frank began to read the diary, it flashed back to July 1942 in an attic in Amsterdam because this was where the people were hiding and represented the type of place that Jews all over were living. The most important part of the play were the people who were acted out. They gave the play a sense of flavor and realism. Anne, a young German girl was particularly amusing because of the scuffles she and everyone around her seemed to have. Anne's Mother was a woman who was more traditional than anything else and wanted Anne to be more like a lady. One such person was Margot.

Act 1, scene 5 is one of the specific scenes that show one of the main ideas of the play, which is that you shouldn’t give up hope, even when the darkest of times are coming and this is shown through the attitude of Anne, as well as Mr. Frank, throughout the play. First off, this scene takes place on the first day of Hanukkah, which is a jewish holiday in which jews celebrate the event of Judah becoming the leader in place of Mattathias. This holiday is celebrated by singing songs, giving gifts, lighting candles, and reading prayers. However, Mr. Frank disagrees. “ You’re speaking in anger. You cannot mean what you are saying.” Mr. Frank doesn’t want the Van Daans to have to live out on the streets. Who exactly is a good person and what about them makes them a good person? In David Foster Wallace’s Good People, the question of what a good person is brought up. Lane and Sherri are Christian college kids who attend the same junior college. Sherri got pregnant before marriage and decides to keep the baby, and while Lane decides to stay supportive he has lost feeling of love for his girlfriend. Two different definitions are brought up, the question is which one is the true meaning of a good person? A good person is either a person who does good deeds but doesn’t truly mean them from the inside or a person who is down to earth from the heart but may not always do good deeds.
Beginning in Act II, Anne is mature and caring. She begins to look out for others instead of just herself. She shows her maturity when she says, "I wish you had a religion, Peter." This shows that she cares for Peter and wants him to have as much hope as she does.
There are many examples where there have been disagreements in this play. To start off, the home lives have shown the siblings’ rivalry. The conflicts between adults, marriage problems, and “favoritism” between parents and children have proved that there have been problems at home for an immense part of history. This play also shows greediness for many adults today. There are many assumptions that the only problems of this depressing time period is where people only worried about Nazis. Everyday, their lives are filled with darkness and degeneracy. The whole world’s scared and they decide to swallow the fear. Growing up in a wartime environment isn’t easy at all. All of their lives have been mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood. Yet, Anne Frank still believes that people are good at heart.
On June 12, 1929, at 7:30 AM, a baby girl was born in Frankfort, Germany. No one realized that this infant, who was Jewish, was destined to become one of the worlds most famous victims of World War II. Her name was Anne Frank. Anne was a girl who lived with her family during the time while the Nazis took power over Germany. Because they were Jewish, Otto, Edith, Margot, and Anne Frank immigrated to Holland in 1933. Hitler invaded Holland on May 10, 1940, a month before Anne?s eleventh birthday. In July 1942, Anne's family went into hiding in the Prinsengracht building. Anne and her family called it the 'Secret Annex'. Life there was not easy at all. They had to wake up at 6:45 every morning. Nobody could go outside, nor turn on lights at night. Anne mostly spent her time reading books, writing stories, and of course, making daily entries in her diary. She only kept her diary while hiding from the Nazis. This diary told the story of the excitement and horror in this young girl's life during the Holocaust. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl reveals the life of a young innocent girl who is forced into hiding from the Nazis because of her religion, Judaism. This book is very informing and enlightening. It introduces a time period of discrimination, unfair judgment, and power-crazed individuals, and with this, it shows the effect on the defenseless.
