Most objects are often regarded based on its physical appearance but often more times than not there is a deeper meaning behind them. Objects often have more symbolic meanings to them than what meets the eye, and if we take the time to really look below the surface we can often come to a much deeper understanding. In “The Glass Menagerie” written by Tennessee Williams, he uses a glass unicorn to symbolize one of the main characters, Laura Wingfield, to represent her life as an outcast, her fragility, and her prosperous ways when she is in the right company.

Tennessee Williams portrays Laura Wingfield to be like the glass unicorn in the sense of not belonging . The unicorn is an animal that is a rare species which causes it to be an outcast in the animal kingdom. The unicorn was an outcast because of “the single horn on his forehead” (1.7.204), which caused it not interact as freely and to look different from the other animals. Later in “The Glass Menagerie,” we are introduced to Jim O’Conner, a key element to helping Laura come out of her shell. The unicorn in “The Glass Menagerie,” is glass and when held up to the light, you can “see how the light shines through him” (1.7.201), this is an example of Laura in an understated way. Laura has conversation with Jim O’Conner, and as the conversations progress you can see a change in her attitude. Her change is very noticeable and she is no longer as shy around him as she once was. The reason the unicorn represents Laura in an understated way is because, when Laura is accompanied by the right person, she will flourish much like the unicorn.
