Slide #1 The Glass Menagerie, a playwright by Tennessee Williams. Slide #2 Have you ever wondered why people act the way they do? Do you believe individuals are born with distinct personality traits or that these personality traits instead are results from traumatizing experiences? Many of us can think of a time when one of our friends have acted really clingy or a had a parent behave unreasonably bossy. Whether we like it or not, many of us still have the decency and patients to deal with these types of personality traits. But when you think of it, where do these characteristics such as “clingy” and “bossy” come from? I believe that all humans have personality and behavioral traits that root from a larger picture. “Honey, don’t push with your fingers. If you have to push something, the thing to push with is a crust of bread” (Williams 98). Slide #21 Amanda attempts to control Tom by the way he eats because she wants him to exhibit perfect manners and etiquette while eating. Although pushing your food with fingers seems silly to nag someone about, the point Amanda wants to get across is that Tom must do everything perfect if he expects to be successful in life. Her goal is to raise her kids perfectly, so that they will never have to depend on anyone. This way of thinking is due to her being abandoned because she does not want her son to have any negative traits. In reality, controlling the way her son eats will only prompt Tom to actually escape. Williams’ purpose of this scene allows one to recognize how Amanda’s controllingness over Tom is due to her being abandoned.
