I have always set big goals, and had even bigger dreams. However, these dreams aren’t like those of some of my classmates such as becoming a movie star or a famous soccer player, but ones of curing cancer and providing the world with answers to scientific phenomena. Should the Gatton Academy provide me the chance to take the next step toward fulfilling these dreams, very little would prevent me from attending. The Academy provides many opportunities for students who want a challenging education, ranging from performing research under university faculty supervision, to a healthy atmosphere of competition, to an extensive curriculum that incorporates student interests. These opportunities leave it impossible for me to find one reason that I would not want to be a part of the academy. Students are given the opportunity to live and go to school with other students that have similar ambitions at heart. At my school, it is extremely rare to find other students who also have the desire to do more than what is minimally required to pass their classes. Simply being placed in an environment where everyone wants to be at school, and working towards the best education possible, would not only be motivational, but inspiring. The experience of meeting current Gatton Academy students has alone given me the inspiration to reignite my dreams of making a difference in the scientific community. There are several reasons why I would like to attend the Woodbridge Academy. Academically, a spectacular learning environment makes a superb school. Some examples of a great learning environment are class sizes being smaller, there is amazing collaboration between the students and faculty, and the school counselors will always be determined and will lead the student in the right direction. Sparks of genius were recognized in his script writing, but he was told only legitimate actors would have a chance at performing the title roles.
The college education that I am seeking goes beyond credentials in that it must first and foremost enrich my mind and spirit, and support my belief in continuous learning. My desire is to be challenged and to gain an experience that I can build upon for the future.
The election night of 2000 was a pivotal moment in my life. I stayed up all night on November 7th, 2000, not because I was enthralled with watching Florida flip-flop between Gore and Bush, but because I had an IV in my arm which made it impossible to be comfortable. Earlier that evening, I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes, a disease affecting 1 of 800 people in America. This was an especially crucial time in my life, considering I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis—an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI track in 1 of 1400 Americans—the June before, and I had my Bar-Mitzvah in September. According to the Jewish religion, I had become an adult, and as such, I had decided to greet my new medical challenges with gusto, attempting to see the silver lining from the very beginning. I cannot say that I am glad I was nature’s statistical anomaly, but I am thankful for the opportunity to see from a young age how to turn a tough situation into a positive. After almost nine years, I come back to this pivotal night in my life because it marked a change that still plays a part in my life now, and will continue to shape me in the future.
College Admissions Essay If someone asked me where I am going to be in ten years, this would be my answer. I have a great, high-paying job, and beautiful wife and family, and a nice sports car parked in front of my lovely house. When I look into the future, I see myself being successful and happy. Looking back in time, I realize that God set the stage for me working with multi-ethnic ministry by ordering each step and influencing every endeavor. For over thirty years, I educated a broad sector of Illinois public school children representative of different economic, racial, cultural and environmental backgrounds.
Travelling around the world gives an individual a unique perspective of life, culture and tolerance. In the tenth grade, I had the opportunity to embark on a journey which provided me with a unique perspective and view of humanity. Similar to my other trips to Europe my initial intention was to enjoy two-weeks away from school in continental Europe, however I was flabbergasted when I realized this two-week trip would serve to destroy my idealist view of a pluralistic society. I was destined for Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic to study the Holocaust.
All of my life I have been a city girl, but I moved to Santa Rosa when I was about 13. Up until I was about 16, I lived there permanently. I used to switch back and forth from parent to parent all of the time. When I first started high school, I went to Piner High and, in my junior year, I went to Montgomery and, from there, to a continuation school. I am currently now back at Piner. I had to basically kick and scream to get back into my regular high school--as you can see there is some drama behind the scene.
The experience of the APEC Youth Science festival was incredible. It has had an enormous impact on me in many ways, changing the way I look at the world and connecting me with people and events far beyond my formerly limited experience. I am extremely glad to have had this opportunity. It was a wonderful experience on multiple levels. It challenged me and expanded me intellectually and socially. I feel that this experience has had an immense impact on me.
My contribution to the UIC Honor College community will include but not limited to community services, innovative research, acquire hands-on experience, and apply what I studied in class to real-life scenarios to make an impact on people’s lives. I have been in my School Honors Program since the sixth grade and understand that being in the honors college means more than just being academically advanced. I will bring qualities such as leadership, character, and service to the honors college community. These qualities are not foreign to me as I have demonstrated them throughout my school years. Soon enough I found myself again, I found that I could push myself and I luckily found OneGoal. I sought out support, connections, networks to achieve my dream to attend and graduate college. This year, junior year has tested me mentally, emotionally and academically. However, I used that to change myself to be someone stronger. As an assignment, I visited UChicago and it was then that I become determined to apply and attend this school - the school of my dreams. “It may be out of your reach.” My PD said, but I stayed set on this dream of mine. I stuck through hard classes, two after school activities and lots more. I refuse to not at least attempt to make it to the university that’s pushed me to push my limits and be the young woman I am today. I believe that UChicago can only help me persevere my dreams to help improve the communities in which I grew up in. I recognize I can be a leader with guidance from others and I can make a difference even if that difference is only in my local community. There is a very famous maxim, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” I strongly believe in this quotation. My desire for knowledge was never ending. Machines fascinated me since my childhood. I always wondered what the mystery behind their functioning was. So I chose to study mechanical engineering. I learned many things about the machines, the more I learn about them through the research the more they enthralled me. I developed a strong interest towards manufacturing field when I started studying manufacturingtechnology in my 4th semester. I gradually fell in love with those processes. Though my college helped me to solve my enigma, my never ending crave for knowledgein manufacturing inclined me to study in your University which is the most promising academy for a student like me, where study and research go hand in hand. It is superfluous to mention, university of Hartford is the best place to learn manufacturing technology.
As I look back on my life, I can truly say that I am grateful for the opportunity to start again. My family flied our war and politically torn country of Eritrea four years ago, seeking shelter here. Through my parent's struggles to build a better life for all of us, I have gained a deep appreciation for hard work and dedication which I applied to my education to achieve my dreams.
