The essential qualities needed to survive were basically denied to workers during the 19th century, which drove individuals and families into dire straits. The trails experienced by the laborer I pretended to be were extremely common during this time. Laborers had little to no say at their jobs and worked under life threatening conditions. Those who lived during this time were working towards a goal they were not promised to see completed. Today we still struggle with similar issues and along with those that stem from this time period. Perhaps time will tell whether it is in fact a curse or a blessing.
