The search for the "fountain of youth" or the "elixir of life" is something that we have read about in many myths and fiction stories throughout the year. They are also things real life explorers looked for dating back centuries, the most famous of which is Ponce de Leon whose search of this elusive fountain took him to Florida in the late 1400 's and early 1500 's. However, He was not the first looking for this fountain that is said to give you the power of endless youth, the desire to stay young is a desire that may date back to the beginning of mankind itself. The scientist that is quickly gaining the most fame pertaining to Bacillus F Dr. Anatoli Brouchkov, head of the Geocryology Department at Moscow State University. The doctor was recently thrown into the spotlight after he admitted to doing something very unexpected, to say the least. 'After successful experiments on mice and fruit flies, I thought it would be interesting to try the inactivated bacterial culture on myself, ' he told The Siberian Times. Since then (it has been 2 years) he says he has more energy and has not gotten sick.
Many will say Dr. Brouchkov is a madman for being his own guinea pig, but this man is officially a Rock Star in my book. There are three reason (that we will dive into shortly) that pushes the doctor from a madman and into rock star status.

The eighteenth exercise of the laboratory manual titled Unknown Identification and Bergey’s Manual is an experiment to identify an unknown bacterium. In this exercise, a student must randomly choose a numbered bacterium available to the class. The keys in Appendix H, located on the last pages of the book, are the major helpful tools in this exercise because it provides completed steps of tests that needs to be performed in order to distinguish certain bacteria. This means that in this exercise, various types of tests and techniques must be performed to identify the chosen unknown bacterium. The unknown bacterium that I selected was number thirty-nine in which I discovered as the Bacillus megaterium after conducting several tests.
In “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” Dr. Heidegger presents a vase full of water from the fountain of youth. The water claims to keep living things healthy and young. Throughout the story, readers experience four miserably old guests drink this water and become young again. Although these guests claim feeling young and looking young, there are instances where it suggests that the elixir is fake and is just a placebo. The water from the fountain of youth is just regular water that Dr. Heidegger convinced the quests that it would make them young again. This is shown when the guests think the demonstration is a deception, when they water’s power was going to “four human beings who needed it more woefully,” and after the vase breaks and the four grow old again (Hawthorne).
In the 16th century, rumors of the Fountain of Youth had spread like wildfire. The thought of immortality, and everlasting youth had fascinated many old, and young adventurers. Most Eukaryotic organism cells are affected by a biological process known as aging. Effect of aging may include the advent of illness, disease, and ultimately death. Death, this fear of end existence had enthralled many people on the quest for prolonged longevity. Therefore, how do we extend our lifespan? Where is this “Fountain of Youth” ? Although the latter question may forever remain a lucrative theory. Perhaps the answer to prolonged longevity may reside on a little known region of a chromosomes, the telomeres.
Louis Pasteur was a famous scientist throughout the 1800s. He is known for his advancements in vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization. He is also known for his breakthroughs concerning disease prevention. He had a wide range of discoveries and advancements, these can be traced by going through the main points in his lifetime which were: his early life, professional career, research contributions of the Germ Theory, contributions to immunology and vaccination, and the honors and wards he received for all of his achievements.
Common sense seems to dictate that we are all going to die one day. As we all get older we crave to keep our youth, and to stay young forever is the ultimate dream. The thought of a possible immortality is just an added benefit. Even though we have strived towards this goal for centuries, have we obtained advances in successfully staying young forever? In Bill Gifford’s book “Spring Chicken: Stay Young Forever (Or Die Trying)” he explores these ideas of life and aging further. In this novel, he goes on a journey to try and debunk the mysteries and questions behind the new science of aging. He gathers information from tests and scientists from around the country to discover what really works to prevent or delay aging and what is just a hopeful hoax. True, the citizens of this "brave new world" do enjoy many refinements and benefits to life. Lenina shows one thing they enjoy when on the reservation she sees an old Indian man and reacts with, "'What's the matter with him?'… 'He's old, that's all,'… 'But the Director's old; lots of people are old; they're not like that.'" (Huxley 110) Evidently Utopia has succeeded in eliminating the effects of old age. Being able to live one's entire life youthful certainly would be wonderful. It is not a thrilling prospect to grow weaker with age, gradually having your sense's perceptiveness fade, so most anyone would prefer this 'unimpaired youth.' There are other things which also make life easier, pointed out by Mustapha Mond talking to John the Savage, "'But there aren't any wars nowadays…There's no such thing as a divided allegiance; you're so conditioned that you can't help doing what you ought to do. And what you ought to do is on the whole so pleasant, so many of the natural impulses are allowed free play, that there really aren't any temptations to resist. Some teenagers or children of the twenty-first century live their lives by the saying "you only live once" in the hope their lives will become exciting. They arrogantly ignore age limits that were created to protect them from the impacts of living by this widely misunderstood expression. This attitude towards age limits is stupid and irresponsible; only life threatening consequences will come from their arrogance. Everyone should take responsibility to guard the childhood of many from the negative impacts of age-restricted material by taking age limits seriously.

During the 19th and 20th century, a lot of people lived a really long life, some of them lived for one hundred, two hundred and even three hundred years. However, now in the 21st century, if a person lives for a hundred years, he is considered a living legend during these times. Moreover, the synthesis of new medications have also been researched but none of them work at all to increase a person's life expectancy. Do you want to live your life for a hundred years or even more? Although many new diseases have recently showed up, we can not blame those diseases. The choices we make affect the longevity of our lives.

The general pattern for people is that when they becoming older they are less able to vary life. Nikolas Westerhoff in his article “Set in Our ways: Why Change is So Hard” described the connection between humans’ brains and behavior during the certain periods of life. The key assumption is that in 20s people are more hazardous and tend to adventures, while after 30s this trend is less expressed. Author gives an example when the young generation can be even over risky and inconsiderate. The article includes the story about 22-year-old Cristopher McCandless, who gave his money for charity and hitchhiked around the USA and died in Alaska because of famine. When 40s – 60s are coming people lose their appetite for novelty due to the natural process, which reveal that old habits express themselves at those ages. The elder generation wants to feel stability continuing do customary things and taking care of their children or grandchildren. Also they are under the society’s pressure, when it is quite inappropriate being infantile or just make crazy travels instead of making a career and having a family. Author mentioned false hope syndrome, which means that people often procrastinate certain thinks that never be finished. That is why Westerhoff suggests doing everything “on a right time in a right place” because then it would be probably late.
Age is but a number. A number that classifies, organizes, and can even define someone. It holds opportunities to learn new things and determines when the path into adulthood begins. The linear notion created by steadily increasing numbers is a very narrow outlook on age. It assumes that as someone grows in age, they are changing both mentally and physically. This, however, is far from the truth. Age is beyond the numbers; it is what lies within. When numbers are disregarded and the qualities attributed to each phase of life is examined, a sequence of repetition can be observed. Instead of growing old, it can be seen as regressing to adolescence. The two outliers of life, infancy and elderly, are far more similar than any numerical value could ever project.
