Personal Statement: My Journey In Public Health

Even though I initially started my journey in public health after graduating from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, I acknowledged my interest and enthusiasm when I was working on my research thesis during the final year of my college. I conducted a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching program to control hypertension among adults residing in selected rural areas of Bangalore in India. It happened to be my first exposure to the field of public health where I had an opportunity to interact with Bangalore’s slum-dwellers and witness their lifestyle, their access to the basic needs such as water, sanitation, and essential nutrients which raised a serious concern on my mind. During the research study, I had a chance to visit five rural districts of Nepal where I directly interacted with the medical officers, district health officers, health care Workers and victims in order to collect data accurately. I got to know about the real challenges people in rural areas are facing because of the poor policy, improper management and lack of awareness. I was sad to know the fact that no disaster management training and adequate planning was done prior to the disaster. In addition to that, more than 18,000 birds and animals were killed after the massive earthquake and those dead bodies were not managed for several weeks which led to threat for epidemic outbreak. From such experiences, I not only had the greater understanding of importance of multifaceted approach to addressing healthcare issues but also strengthened my critical thinking skills in design and evaluation of effective plans. Similarly, I am participating in the six-day proposal development training program in the upcoming month and the training will certainly help me to acquire further knowledge in health care planning and
