Even though I initially started my journey in public health after graduating from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, I acknowledged my interest and enthusiasm when I was working on my research thesis during the final year of my college. I conducted a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching program to control hypertension among adults residing in selected rural areas of Bangalore in India. It happened to be my first exposure to the field of public health where I had an opportunity to interact with Bangalore’s slum-dwellers and witness their lifestyle, their access to the basic needs such as water, sanitation, and essential nutrients which raised a serious concern on my mind. During the research study, I had a chance to visit five rural districts of Nepal where I directly interacted with the medical officers, district health officers, health care Workers and victims in order to collect data accurately. I got to know about the real challenges people in rural areas are facing because of the poor policy, improper management and lack of awareness. I was sad to know the fact that no disaster management training and adequate planning was done prior to the disaster. In addition to that, more than 18,000 birds and animals were killed after the massive earthquake and those dead bodies were not managed for several weeks which led to threat for epidemic outbreak. From such experiences, I not only had the greater understanding of importance of multifaceted approach to addressing healthcare issues but also strengthened my critical thinking skills in design and evaluation of effective plans. In addition, research is another fundamental necessary in ensuring human health quality for individuals. I admire the researchers who commit in finding answers to fight against chronic diseases occurring worldwide. I have significantly respect the researchers who work together in discovering new diseases and treatments affecting individuals globally and not only fulfilling one country’s needs. It is my desire to become one of those researchers in the next ten years contributing in global health and decreasing global health inequalities in order to provide health care equality for every human being living in the world. We need to work together, globally, and collaborate in order to end health inequalities and the pursuit of human equality in the sake of social justice.

It all began when I started volunteering in Los Angeles, with my mother at Asian Pacific Health Care Clinic. Asian Pacific Health Care Clinic is a clinic for low-income families who were in need of vaccinations and other health care services. One day my mom received a phone call from the clinic and asked me to go volunteer with her. Since that day, I would have never guessed that it will impact my decision in pursuing my career as a nurse. I was assigned to help patients fill out vaccination forms, translate verbally, and assist the nurses who were in need of my help. I noticed the joy on each patient’s face once they were finished their vaccinations, and it made me happy to know I put a smile on people 's face after their vaccinations. The decision to become a doctor is a very personal one. For many it takes years of personal realization. And for others, it 's always been their life 's calling to pursue medical school and ultimately don the iconic white lab coat. Being born to doctor parents, medical profession was not something very new to me and always seemed like one of the options that can be pursued. But what really committed me to medical profession was death of my best friend at a young age due to kidney problem. Medicine is a very complex and interesting felid, it 's constantly changing with the new advancements being made all the time. My interest in medicine came at a young age from going to various doctor’s appointments for myself and family members. I found it fascinating how doctors took care of people. I also enjoyed the interaction between the doctor and patient, whether it was a positive or negative interaction.I was very inspired by doctors and wanted to be like them. But I didn’t fully consider a career in medicine until I began high school.
A key component of public health is that it is always changing with the advent of new technologies. So many discoveries and initiatives have helped improve persons’ environments; inversely, there are threats such as climate change and diseases that progress from endemic to epidemic, presenting daunting challenges to even the most experienced of health professionals. Whether the issue regards sickle cell disease or smoking cessation, everything has some association to one another in the sense I can apply the skills I have learned to combat the barriers that impede one’s quality of life. My time studying public health as an undergrad as well my two years as a public health professional has opened a lot of opportunities for me to succeed in life; both academically and professionally, the various disciplines of public health have changed my perspectives and helped influence me to make a difference for the betterment of those around me. As one with so much interest in public health, I feel I have learned a lot, yet a lot to learn.
As a freshman, I was conflicted about what I wanted out of college. At the time, I naively believed that I would major in Neuroscience and Arabic while completing plenty of biomedical research on the side. Perhaps I would also sign up for a few clubs here and there and thus produce the perfect resume for medical school. In the following year, I realized that my heart was not into the breakneck agenda I planned for myself and I started to reevaluate just what exactly I wanted to pursue in my undergraduate experience.
